Eight-year-old boy drowns in lake near Hannover as series of water deaths hit Germany over two days
An eight-year-old boy was found dead in a bathing lake near Hannover after a two-hour search, while two elderly men drowned in Lake Constance a day earlier and other fatalities were reported from Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.
A child's final swim at Parksee Lohne
On Friday afternoon, an eight-year-old boy disappeared while bathing in the Parksee Lohne, a popular lake in Isernhagen near Hannover. He had been in the water with a friend of the same age and an adult man when witnesses lost sight of him around 3 p.m., according to police. An estimated 500 people were on the site at the time.
Around 60 emergency workers, including volunteers, police, and firefighters, conducted a systematic search using a human chain, a police helicopter with a thermal imaging camera, and a sonar boat to explore the lake bed. After nearly two hours, divers recovered the boy's body. He was given resuscitation and transported to hospital, but police later confirmed his death.
Lake Constance claims two elderly swimmers
The previous afternoon, two men aged 71 and 76 jumped from a rented boat into Lake Constance before their wives' eyes, about 200 metres from Kirchberg harbour near Immenstaad. Both disappeared underwater. An initial multi-hour search was unsuccessful, but divers later recovered their bodies.

- Two men aged 71 and 76 jump from a rental boat into Lake Constance near Immenstaad; disappear.
- A 40-year-old man is found dead in Lake Bühl, Ahnatal, after his clothes are spotted by another swimmer.
- An eight-year-old boy disappears while bathing in Parksee Lohne, Isernhagen, amid around 500 visitors.

- A teenager falls from a boat in Düren; search underway.
Other fatalities: Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
Early Friday, a 40-year-old man was found dead in Lake Bühl in Ahnatal, Hesse, after another swimmer noticed unclaimed clothes and alerted police. The body was located roughly two hours later. Authorities said there was no sign of foul play and assumed a tragic accident.
In Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, a teenager fell from a boat into the water and remains missing, according to a separate report from the same day.
Rescue hampered by blocked access
Police and fire services in Isernhagen said the emergency response was slowed because rescue access roads were partly blocked by parked cars, a police spokesperson told NDR Niedersachsen. The obstruction delayed the arrival of search teams.
Drowning toll in Germany
Germany records around 400 drowning deaths annually, mostly in ponds, lakes, and rivers, according to data cited by Spiegel Online. Experts often attribute such incidents to swimmers overestimating their abilities and underestimating risks like currents. The incidents on 25 and 26 June add to a seasonal pattern of water-related fatalities during warm weather.
