Bundeswehr confirms two drones over sole Patriot maintenance base in Europe at Mechernich

Around 22:00 on Thursday, 6 August, the security center of the Bundeswehr site in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, reported two drones over the installation. The Operative Führungskommando der Bundeswehr confirmed the sighting after Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR and WDR first reported the case. Feldjäger (military police) investigated on site before handing the case to police in Euskirchen, who opened an investigation but have not yet commented publicly. According to Blick.ch, security personnel observed at least six drone overflights during the night, and police officers called to the scene witnessed at least one overflight themselves, with one drone briefly circling above the emergency responders.

A Bundeswehr spokesperson provided confirmation on Saturday, 8 August.

The suspicion of two drones was confirmed and military police forces were then dispatched.

A sensitive military site

The Mechernich facility is no ordinary barracks. According to WDR, the site stores equipment and spare parts for the armed forces across an area of 30,000 square kilometers and houses specialists responsible for maintaining and repairing the Patriot air defense system. The installation, known within the military as the "Patriot-Werft" (Patriot workshop), is reportedly the only facility of its kind in Europe. The police investigation is focusing on suspicion of security-endangering imaging of military installations, weapons systems, or sensitive areas. WDR further reported, without official confirmation, that the drone was likely a Fly-380 VTOL type, a model used for surveying, mapping, border surveillance, and transport in difficult terrain.

Multiple agencies involved

Several authorities are now engaged with the case, according to Tagesschau: the police, the Landeskriminalamt Nordrhein-Westfalen (state criminal police), the Militärischer Abschirmdienst (military intelligence service responsible for counterespionage in the military domain), and the Gemeinsames Drohnenabwehrzentrum (Joint Drone Defense Center, which coordinates federal and state cooperation on unmanned aircraft). No details about the type, size, or flight path of the drones have been released, and the responsible agencies have not commented on possible investigative leads. Who controlled the drones and what purpose the overflights served remains unclear.

Earlier Leipzig airport incident

The Mechernich sighting follows a separate drone incident two days earlier at Leipzig/Halle airport. On the late evening of Tuesday, 4 August, an explosive-equipped drone with a detonator was discovered near Ukrainian transport planes. An airport employee brought it down. Because the runway was closed, an incoming cargo plane had to abort its landing and collided with an unidentified smaller flying object, possibly a second drone. The Federal Prosecutor's Office (Bundesanwaltschaft) has taken over the investigation.

This is a serious attack on the transport and logistics infrastructure in Germany. This makes the act capable of affecting the external and internal security of the Federal Republic.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the Leipzig incident as a hybrid attack scenario carried out by highly professional perpetrators and did not rule out "foreign powers" as orchestrators.

Patriot missile context

The Mechernich base's role as a Patriot maintenance facility adds a layer of concern. Multiple US media reported on Thursday that the US Army has used half of its Patriot missiles compared to pre-war stockpiles, partly due to the war between the United States and Iran. This shortage has raised concerns among US allies, with Gulf states such as Qatar and Bahrain dependent on US air defense systems. Whether the drone overflights in Mechernich are connected to the facility's Patriot role remains open.
