Two drones spotted over German base repairing Patriot systems after explosive drone found at Leipzig

Drone overflights at Mechernich

Security personnel at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, reported two drones over the facility on the night of Thursday, August 6. The overflights began around 22:00 and continued until 05:00 on Friday, with a total of six separate sightings, according to reports by WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. The base sits near Bonn, about 35 kilometers from the Belgian border, in the Eifel region.

Military police were mobilized and investigated before transferring the case to civilian police in the Euskirchen district. The Regional Criminal Office of North Rhine-Westphalia and federal security authorities are also participating. Police are investigating under suspicion of photography endangering the security of military installations. At the last sighting, Euskirchen district officers already on site observed at least one drone pass, and Bundeswehr soldiers witnessed the scene from approximately 40 meters away.

The Fly-380 VTOL

A confidential police report indicated the drone was likely a Fly-380 VTOL model, according to Tagesschau. This type has a wingspan of approximately 3.8 meters, a range of up to 400 kilometers, and a top speed of 150 km/h. It can carry a payload of more than 10 kilograms, compared with consumer drones that typically carry no more than 2 kilograms. Die Zeit reported that two different types of drones were involved. The investigation has not concluded that the devices were civilian drones lost during surveying work.

The Patriot repair facility

The Materiallager Mechernich is a strategically important logistics hub for the German armed forces. Parts of the complex lie 130 meters underground, covering approximately 30,000 square meters, storing equipment and spare parts for military technology. The facility, known among troops as the "Patriot-Werft" (Patriot shipyard), is used for maintenance and repair of US Patriot air defense systems and is likely the only installation of its kind in Europe. Germany is one of the NATO member states supplying Patriot systems to Ukraine for defense against Russian ballistic missile attacks. Whether launchers destined for Ukraine are also serviced at Mechernich is not known.

Leipzig/Halle airport incident

The Mechernich overflights occurred two days after a drone carrying explosives was discovered on Tuesday, August 4, at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major cargo hub and NATO logistics center that hosts the Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS). The device was found near a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines cargo plane loaded with munitions in a restricted-access area. A bus driver on the taxiway spotted the drone flying low to the ground and neutralized it with a kick, unaware it carried explosives. German media reported the improvised bomb was powerful enough to destroy an aircraft. Anti-terror police are investigating possible sabotage.

Official reactions

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt interrupted his vacation and called the Leipzig incident a "hybrid attack" and a "new threat scenario," not ruling out involvement of "a foreign power." While Berlin did not name a country, some parliamentarians pointed to Russia, which has been at war with Ukraine since February 2022. The Russian embassy in Berlin issued a statement on Friday calling the discovery of the explosive drone a "fabricated provocation" and speaking of "a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria." The embassy said the hybrid attacks described by Germany are invented to provoke Russia.
