Ukrainian drones strike Samara logistics and refining facilities
Ukrainian long-range drones struck industrial infrastructure deep inside Russia overnight on 22 August 2026, hitting facilities roughly 1,000 kilometres from the front line. In the Samara region, a drone strike damaged a large logistics hub operated by Ozon, Russia's second-largest e-commerce marketplace after Wildberries. The resulting fire prompted the evacuation of more than 500 employees within minutes. Ozon confirmed casualties and injuries among staff, and the company suspended warehouse operations indefinitely while redistributing logistics activities across other facilities. Ukrainian forces also struck an oil refinery in Novokuybyshevsk during the same operation, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in a statement on Telegram.
Tonight, our armed forces and mobile air defence teams repelled a massive drone attack on our region. Several dozen enemy drones were shot down and neutralised. An industrial facility suffered damage. An impact was also recorded at the Ozon logistics complex. At the moment, several people are injured. Everyone is receiving medical assistance.
Expansion of strikes against Russian e-commerce infrastructure
The Samara strike represents the first confirmed attack against Ozon, expanding an air campaign that had previously targeted logistics hubs belonging to Wildberries since 18 July 2026. Ukrainian authorities view these commercial distribution networks as contributors to the Russian war effort and seek to disrupt domestic logistics chains. Russian news agencies TASS and Interfax reported that warehouse operations at the Samara hub were suspended and inventory redistributed to alternate sites. Regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev stated that air defence units neutralised several dozen incoming drones across Samara Oblast, though direct hits and falling debris damaged both an industrial plant and the Ozon facility.

Russian overnight strikes kill two in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia
Russian forces carried out concurrent overnight attacks across Ukraine on 22 August, killing at least two people. In Kyiv, an air alert was followed by a warehouse fire in the Darnytskyi district, where the capital's military administration recorded one death and several injuries. In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike killed one man and wounded four others, according to regional military administration head Ivan Fedorov. These overnight strikes followed a wider wave of Russian bombardments on 21 August that killed at least 20 people across Ukraine.
Investigation into Kryvyi Rih commercial complex strike
The deadliest recent attack took place on Friday, 21 August, at a crowded shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Zelensky. The strike killed between 15 and 16 people and injured 130 others, including 23 children, while emergency teams reported nine people missing, among them two children. Ukrainian officials stated that a second jet-powered Shahed drone struck the complex 30 minutes after the initial hit, conducting a double-tap attack that targeted emergency responders. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast police opened a criminal negligence investigation against the director of a supermarket inside the facility. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi stated that the business remained open during the air raid siren and that many victims were found inside the supermarket. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed the timing of the strike, which Zelensky condemned as cynical and despicable.
