Drone crashes onto crowded Russian beach near Gelendzhik, killing seven including three children

A drone crashed onto a crowded beach in the southern Russian village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, near Gelendzhik on the Black Sea coast, on Monday 3 August 2026. Russian authorities said at least seven people were killed, including three children, and 40 others were injured. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said 17 of the injured were taken to hospitals in Gelendzhik, the Tuapse district and Goryachy Klyuch, four of them, including two children, in a serious condition. A specialist disaster medicine team was dispatched to the scene.

What happened

Verified video footage shows a drone hurtling toward a cliffside before crashing into a fireball on the beach below, where dozens of tourists were resting or swimming. Eyewitnesses told local radio station 93.ru that no air-raid sirens sounded before the attack. "We were on the beach and didn't even have time to leave," one holidaymaker said. Other witnesses reported hearing gunfire, described as "like a machine gun," moments before the explosion, suggesting Russian air defences may have attempted to shoot the drone down.

What happened today was a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population, which has no connection whatsoever to military infrastructure.

Some Ukrainian Telegram channels claimed the drone crashed onto the beach after electronic warfare jammed its signal. Several military analysts noted that footage shows the drone being fired upon by Russian air defence before losing altitude and falling onto the beach, indicating it was intercepted. A shortened version of the same video, omitting the air-defence fire, began circulating on Russian social media and was presented as proof of a direct Ukrainian strike on civilians.

Casualties and response

The death toll rose through the day. Early reports from Reuters cited four dead and 10 injured. By evening, the Krasnodar operational headquarters confirmed seven dead, including three children, and 40 injured. Alexei Kuznetsov, an adviser to the Russian health ministry, said four civilians, including two children, were in a critical condition. Five ambulance brigades from Gelendzhik, three from Tuapse, and specialists from Krasnodar responded. Russian investigators opened a case under the terrorism statute.

Wider context

Arkhipo-Osipovka is a popular summer destination for Russians, its importance growing since international sanctions curtailed foreign travel. The attack occurred near a complex between Arkhipo-Osipovka and Gelendzhik that a 2021 investigation by Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation linked to Vladimir Putin, though the Russian president has denied ownership.

Ukraine has not commented on the incident. Its military has repeatedly stated it does not deliberately target civilians. Russia, meanwhile, has struck residential areas and cities throughout its full-scale invasion launched in February 2022. On Saturday, at least nine people were killed in Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The previous month, Russia accused Ukraine of killing 11 people, including four children, in an attack on a holiday camp in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region.

Three civilians were also killed in an overnight attack on the Russian-controlled Crimean peninsula, according to Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-installed governor. A separate drone attack on Monday caused a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in the Vladimir region, injuring one person.

On Monday, Sweden's foreign ministry summoned Russia's top diplomat in Stockholm to protest Moscow's attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
