One dead after car crashes into wall and catches fire on old national road in Varybombi
A driver died early Sunday when their vehicle veered off the road, struck a wall, and burst into flames on the old National Road near Varybombi, north of Athens.
The crash
Shortly after midnight on Sunday, a car traveling toward Lamia on the old National Road service road in Varybombi left the roadway and crashed. The vehicle struck a wall and then overturned before igniting. Emergency services arrived to find the car a mangled mass of metal, and the driver was pulled from the wreckage without signs of life. The victim, whose identity and age have not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause
Initial reports indicate the driver may have become disoriented at a fork in the road, causing them to lose control. The car then veered into the wall and subsequently caught fire. No other vehicles were involved. The exact sequence is still under investigation by local authorities.
Emergency response
Crews were dispatched to the site to recover the vehicle and clear the debris. The burned-out wreck was removed, and the road was reopened. Traffic in the area was not significantly affected, as the incident occurred on the service road parallel to the main highway.
Investigation
Greek traffic police are examining the circumstances of the single-vehicle fatality. A spokesperson said the cause remains undetermined and no further details about the driver are available. The investigation is ongoing.
