Alexander Dobrindt tours Thuringia fire station and warns against AfD polarization
During a visit to Eisenach, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt joined a firefighting exercise, discussed coalition disputes in Berlin, and reiterated plans to keep border controls in place through March 2027.
Public meetings and outreach in Thuringia
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt visited Thuringia and Hesse as part of his official summer tour, stopping in the town of Eisenach to meet residents and local workers. On the central market square, Dobrindt sat at tables alongside citizens, including a group of women wearing shirts printed with the phrase "Hallöchen Aperölchen". During the outdoor walkabout, the minister purchased rounds of ice cream and beer while discussing regional affairs with local young adults. Citizens who engaged in longer conversations received a custom metal keepsake, the commemorative coin of the federal interior minister. Dobrindt also distributed the coin to two federal police officers who accompanied his travel across state borders and asked for a photograph.
Fire department exercise in Eisenach
Dobrindt visited the Eisenach professional fire station, where fire chief Markus Weigelt received the federal delegation. Weigelt noted that local personnel were surprised when the federal minister initially proposed the visit, though staff welcomed the engagement. Dobrindt put on protective equipment, including an official jacket, gloves, and a helmet, before using a fire hose in the courtyard to extinguish a burning tower of wooden pallets within several minutes. Local firefighters noted that the exercise went smoothly for a beginner. The stop followed nationwide firefighting operations during the previous week, when emergency crews tackled forest fires across multiple federal states, including severe blazes in the Eifel region supported by the Federal Police, the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), and the Bundeswehr.

Coalition politics and federal polling
Following the drill, Dobrindt compared firefighting to his daily political coordination within the black-red governing coalition in Berlin. He commented that other coalition partners create political friction while he acts as the official who resolves disputes. Officials in federal ministries led by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have noted that Dobrindt plays a constructive role during inter-ministerial talks. The former CSU regional group leader brings years of internal negotiation experience to his federal office. The summer tour takes place as public opinion remains critical of the governing coalition. According to a ZDF Politbarometer survey conducted by Forschungsgruppe Wahlen in late July, 68% of eligible voters evaluated the federal government's performance as rather poor.
Putting out fires is after all my daily task in Berlin.
Security policy and September elections
Journalists travelling with the minister questioned him regarding active security investigations, including inquiries into an explosive device aboard a drone discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport and potential Russian links. Dobrindt noted that irregular migration had become less prominent in daily policy because fewer asylum seekers were arriving in Germany compared to his early months in office. However, the minister confirmed plans to extend temporary border controls along German frontiers until at least March 2027. Ahead of state parliament elections scheduled for September, Dobrindt addressed the political atmosphere and democratic values.
Far-right parties like the AfD are not only an expression of polarization, but are at the same time an amplifier of polarization.
