Diver dies after cardiac arrest off Três Irmãos beach in Portimão
A 56-year-old man died on Saturday afternoon following a cardiorespiratory arrest while diving roughly 1.5 nautical miles off Praia dos Três Irmãos in Portimão.
A 56-year-old man died on Saturday afternoon after entering cardiorespiratory arrest during a recreational dive off the coast of Alvor in the municipality of Portimão. According to a statement released on Sunday by the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the victim began experiencing difficulties roughly 1.5 nautical miles (about 2.8 kilometres) south of Praia dos Três Irmãos while accompanied by family members. His brother pulled him from the water.
The Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Lisboa) received an alert at 14:23, prompting the dispatch of the Portimão Maritime Police, the local Port Captaincy, volunteer firefighters, and an emergency medical team from the INEM resuscitation vehicle (VMER). Responders administered basic life support measures during the journey to Portimão Marina, where medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts. Responders declared the man dead at the marina before firefighters transferred his body to the morgue at Portimão Hospital.
