Indonesian word association game 'Dito!' wins Spiel des Jahres 2026 as Reiner Knizia completes triple
The competitive word association game by Martin Ang is the first Indonesian title to claim the world's most prestigious board game award. Reiner Knizia became the first designer to win all three jury prizes with 'Rebirth'.
Award ceremony on Sunday
The Spiel des Jahres 2026 winners were announced on 12 July in Berlin. The awards, presented by a jury of German-language critics, have been given since 1979 to the main prize, with the children's award added in 2001 and the Kennerspiel (connoisseur's game) introduced in 2011 for more complex titles. The year's nominees were described by juror Christoph Schlewinski as "very creative and bursting with ideas", a comment that set the tone for a ceremony rich in first-time achievements.
Main prize goes to Indonesia
"Dito!", a competitive word association game by Indonesian designer Martin Ang, won the Spiel des Jahres 2026. Published by Game Factory, it is the first game from Indonesia ever nominated for the award, and now the first to win. The game beat out "Cozy Stickerville" (Unexpected Games) and "Morty Sorty Magic Shop" (Schmidt Spiele). The winners receive the right to print a red meeple on the box, a symbol known to multiply sales. Ang, visibly emotional, addressed the room with a short statement.
People, we won.
Knizia's historic triple
In the Kennerspiel category, "Rebirth" by Reiner Knizia took the prize. The game, published by Frosted Games and Mighty Boards, has players rebuild Scotland after an apocalypse. Knizia now becomes the first author to win all three jury awards: Spiel des Jahres with "Keltis" (2008), Kinderspiel des Jahres with "Wer war's?" (also 2008), and now the connoisseur's prize. With more than 600 published games, the Munich-based designer is one of the industry's most prolific creators. Knizia described his philosophy simply.
My goal is always to keep the entry simple, but to keep the player engaged for a long time.
"Rebirth" held off competition from "Boss Fighters QR" by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach (Pegasus Spiele) and "Moon Colony Bloodbath" by Donald X. Vaccarino (Alea).
Children's award born from a son's request
"Die Insel der Mookies" by Florian Sirieix won the Kinderspiel des Jahres. The Kosmos-published game involves collecting magical creatures and matching symbols. Sirieix explained that his son asked him for a five-minute game to play before school. Lacking one, he created it himself.
My son asked me to play a five-minute game with him before school. I didn't have one, so I made one myself.
The other shortlisted titles were "Buh Party" (Loki), co-designed by Sirieix with Benoit Turpin, and "Verflixt verzaubert" by Thomas Dagenais-Lespérance (Game Factory).
A global moment for board games
The win for an Indonesian title marks a departure from the traditionally German and European dominance of the prize. Ang's debut game, centered on quick word connections, now joins a lineage that includes Catan and Carcassonne. The industry will watch whether the "red meeple" effect propels "Dito!" to similar commercial success.
