Czechia defeats Switzerland 2-1 in Women's Euro Hockey Tour finale
Czechia handed Switzerland a 2-1 defeat in Kloten on Saturday, securing Sweden the tournament title after Swiss captain Lara Stalder left injured.
The Swiss women's national ice hockey team ended their Women's Euro Hockey Tour campaign in Kloten with a 2-1 defeat against Czechia. The result marked the first loss for Switzerland in three tournament fixtures under the leadership of new head coach Shannon Miller. Switzerland had opened the four-nation tournament with consecutive victories over Sweden and Finland, positioning the squad in contention for the tournament title. The match in Kloten began with an energetic opening period in which both sides generated scoring opportunities around the opposition goalcrease. Neither side managed to convert during the initial twenty minutes, keeping the scoreline level heading into the first intermission. Czechia broke the deadlock four minutes into the second period when Daniela Pejsova scored at the 24th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Stalder injury and Czech power-play goal
Following the opening Czech goal, Switzerland mounted several attacking sequences in an effort to level the score. The hosts suffered a setback just as the second period concluded and the horn sounded. Swiss captain Lara Stalder collided with Czech goaltender Julie Pejsova at high speed and struck the perimeter boards. Stalder was visibly dazed and required assistance from team staff to leave the ice surface. Medical evaluation prevented Stalder from returning to the game for the third period. The Swiss team found it difficult to regain offensive rhythm without their captain on the ice during the early minutes of the final period. Czechia capitalized on their momentum at the 51st minute, doubling the score to 2-0 when Michaela Pejzlova scored during a power play resulting from a minor penalty against Swiss forward Laura Zimmermann.
Swiss late rally falls short
Immediately following the second Czech goal, Miller called a timeout to reset Switzerland's tactical plan for the remainder of the contest. The tactical stoppage produced an immediate result at the 53rd minute, as Leoni Balzer finished off a 3-on-2 attacking rush to reduce Czechia's lead to 2-1. Switzerland increased offensive pressure as time ticked away and received an opportunity when Czechia took a penalty at the 58th minute. Miller elected to pull Swiss goaltender Andrea Brändli for an extra attacker, giving Switzerland a 6-on-4 player advantage on the ice. During the final minute, the Swiss team created a dangerous sequence with the puck lying free just centimeters from the Czech goal line. Goaltender Julie Pejsova extended her right skate to clear the puck away only seconds before the final horn, preventing Swiss forward Naemi Herzig from converting an equalizer.
