World Cup 2026: Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room saves 15 in 0-0 draw with Ecuador, securing first point for tournament debutant
Curacao, the smallest nation by area to ever appear at a men's World Cup, held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw in Kansas City on Saturday, claiming its first point in tournament history.
A debutant's uphill start
Curacao entered the match reeling from a 7-1 defeat to Germany in its opening game, while Ecuador had lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast after Amad Diallo's 90th-minute goal. Both sides needed a result to stay alive in Group E, where Germany later beat Ivory Coast 2-1 to move to the brink of a round-of-16 place. Coach Dick Advocaat set his team up to defend, and the smallest country ever to appear at a World Cup would lean heavily on its 37-year-old goalkeeper.
Room stands firm against Ecuador onslaught
Ecuador, managed by Sebastian Beccacece, fired 27 shots over the 90 minutes. The barrage began in the second minute when Enner Valencia broke through one-on-one, only for Eloy Room to parry the effort. John Yeboah, a former Raków Częstochowa and Śląsk Wrocław player, and Pedro Vite also had early chances denied. Room's authority grew as the match wore on; he finished with 15 interventions, a figure not reached by any goalkeeper in a non-extra-time World Cup match before.
Curacao did not simply park the bus. In the 60th minute, Leandro Bacuna's long-range attempt was deflected by Hernán Galindez, and Juninho Bacuna, after a clever feint, picked out Livano Comenencia, whose dangerous shot was again repelled by Ecuador's goalkeeper. That sequence, while brief, showed the debutant could threaten.
History made, and a record in sight
When referee Ning Ma (his first World Cup appointment) blew the final whistle, the 0-0 scoreline delivered Curacao's first point at a World Cup. Room's 15 saves became the most in regulation time in tournament history, falling just one short of Tim Howard's overall record of 16, set for the United States against Belgium in 2014.
Eloy Room, goalkeeper of Curaçao, played an incredible match, blocking Ecuador's offensive efforts and writing himself into the history of the small Central American country.
The VAR team for the match included Polish official Tomasz Kwiatkowski.
Room, who plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, the second tier in the United States, is now a global talking point. Curacao, with a population of roughly 150,000, will face Ivory Coast in its final group game still with a mathematical chance of progression.
