A man and a pregnant woman drowned in a lake in Siemirowice, Pomeranian Voivodeship, on 15 August 2026 after an apparent argument on a pier. Both died despite immediate rescue efforts.
What happened
A man and a woman drowned in a lake in Siemirowice, in the commune of Cewice (Lębork County, Pomeranian Voivodeship), on Saturday, 15 August 2026. Emergency services received a report around 18:00 that two people had entered the water in a section of the lake where swimming was banned. A police patrol dispatched to the scene found volunteer firefighters from OSP Cewice already conducting rescue operations. Despite resuscitation efforts, the lives of both the woman and the man could not be saved. TVN24 reported that the woman was 35 years old.
Circumstances of the drowning
Sebastian Kluska, director of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service (SAR), revealed details of the incident on the social media platform X. He wrote that the couple had argued on a pier before both fell into the water, and that the woman was pregnant. Kluska published photographs from the rescue operation alongside his comments.
Siemirowice gm. Cewice. I can still be surprised by something. For example, this tragedy. The couple argued on the pier. Both fell into the water. Both are dead. The woman was additionally pregnant. My dear friends, water does not forgive mistakes. Two, maybe three lives lost through stupidity.
Rescue operation
Multiple emergency units responded to the scene. In addition to the police patrol and the volunteer firefighters from OSP Cewice, the operation involved firefighters from PSP Lębork, OSP Łebunia, the Military Fire Service in Siemirowice, and a medical rescue team. The bodies of the woman and the man were recovered from the lake. Resuscitation was performed but did not succeed in reviving either person.
Investigation underway
Lębork police are conducting an investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor's office to establish the exact sequence of events. Police spokesperson Magdalena Zielke told Radio Gdańsk that officers are carrying out activities aimed at clarifying the circumstances of the tragedy. The key questions include whether the argument on the pier led directly to both people falling into the water and why they entered a section of the lake where swimming was prohibited.
Broader context
The incident occurred during the summer holiday season, when water safety is a recurring concern in Poland. Dziennik Bałtycki noted that the news spread quickly among rescue service circles. The article also referenced a separate incident in which a 78-year-old man drowned at a bathing area in Ustka. Kluska's public appeal urged caution during recreation near water, stressing that water does not forgive mistakes.
