Wyndham Clark opens five-shot lead over Rory McIlroy at BMW Championship
Wyndham Clark carded a five-under 65 on Saturday to take a five-shot lead into the final round at Bellerive Country Club, with Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay tied for second at 12 under.
Clark maintains advantage at Bellerive
Wyndham Clark established a five-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard after shooting a five-under-par 65 in the third round. The American began Saturday with a double bogey on the opening hole, dropping his first shots of the tournament. He recovered by making two birdies and an eagle at the par-five eighth hole to reach two under at the turn. Clark then produced four birdies across the next five holes on the back nine before closing with a bogey on the 18th hole. His 17-under-par total leaves him five strokes clear of the field heading into Sunday.
McIlroy recovers to tie Cantlay in second
Rory McIlroy posted a five-under 65 to move into joint second position on 12 under par alongside Patrick Cantlay, who shot 66. The Northern Irishman rebounded from a second-round 69 after sharing the lead on Thursday with an opening six-under round. McIlroy birdied the par-three second hole and added another birdie on the 11th hole. He subsequently added four birdies over the closing stretch from the 13th hole, offset by a lone bogey on the 14th hole. On the 18th hole, McIlroy avoided dropped shots from both greenside bunkers with a recovery chip to save par.
Speaking after the round, McIlroy reflected on his path through the third day.
I think I needed to be patient the last three days, because my game has been good in parts, but then it has been a struggle in other ways.
He also addressed the difficulty of navigating the course from outside the fairways.
I didn't hit my first fairway today until the 10th hole, playing this golf course from the rough isn't fun, but I hung in there, my short game saved me a couple of times and I got some momentum coming in.
Chasing pack and leaderboard shifts
Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland sit one stroke behind McIlroy and Cantlay on 11 under par. Woodland fell back from the top group after recording an even-par 70 on Saturday. A four-way tie for eighth place at eight under par includes Maverick McNealy, Ryo Hisatsune, Eric Cole, and JJ Spaun, whose challenge faded following a two-over round of 72.

Field performances and final round outlook
Further down the order, world number one Scottie Scheffler carded a two-under 68 to reach five under par overall alongside Robert MacIntyre. Scheffler, who won the St Jude Championship a week earlier, opened the event with a two-over 72 before climbing up the standings over the weekend. Tommy Fleetwood posted a 74 to finish the third round at two over par.
Looking ahead to the final round, McIlroy assessed the gap between the pursuers and the leader.
I am in a good spot going into tomorrow in terms of where I am at on the leaderboard, but it's going to take a heroic effort from one of us to catch Wyndham.
