Forest fire near Chiemsee forces closure of A8 motorway; 200 firefighters respond
A forest fire burning several hectares of woodland and moor near Chiemsee in Bavaria has forced the closure of the A8 motorway between Übersee and Bernau due to heavy smoke. Some 200 firefighters have been on the scene since Sunday evening.
Fire breaks out at Chiemsee
A wildfire ignited in a forest and moorland zone near Lake Chiemsee in Upper Bavaria on the evening of Sunday, 28 June 2026. By Monday morning, the fire had consumed 5.5 hectares of land, an area roughly equivalent to eight football pitches, according to a local fire department spokesman cited by stern.de. Earlier accounts from other news outlets had described the affected area as stretching to several hectares or thousands of square metres; one initial report mistakenly mentioned thousands of square kilometres before being corrected. The fire is burning through both trees and peat, which complicates firefighting because peat fires can smoulder beneath the surface and are notoriously stubborn to extinguish. The origin of the blaze remains undetermined.
A8 motorway forced to close
Dense, low-lying smoke from the fire drifted directly over the adjacent A8 motorway, the main route linking Munich and Salzburg. Visibility was so severely reduced that police ordered the complete closure of the carriageway between the Übersee and Bernau exits. The closure took effect early Monday and immediately caused significant disruption for commuters and long-distance traffic. Police set up diversion routes, but drivers faced long delays.
The duration of the closure is uncertain and will depend largely on wind direction and the success of the firefighting efforts. The rising smoke is causing visibility problems.
Overnight firefighting operation
Roughly 200 firefighters have been on site since the fire was first reported late on Sunday. They have been working throughout the night and into the morning to contain the flames. To bolster these efforts, a police helicopter was brought in on Monday morning to perform water drops, scooping water from the Chiemsee and releasing it over the burning area. One firefighter sustained minor injuries while combating the blaze; no other injuries have been reported. The mixed terrain of forest and moor is demanding additional resources and time.
Safety warnings to the public
The fire department issued a warning to residents in the surrounding area, advising them to keep all windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes. This advisory remains in effect and will stay until the fire's smoke output diminishes. There were also general appeals for the public to avoid the immediate vicinity. Officials gave no indication of when the motorway might reopen.
The duration of the closure depends above all on the wind direction and the speed of the firefighting efforts.
