Thousands march to Morocco border in Ceuta over migration crisis and damaged sea barrier
Demonstrators in Ceuta marched to the Tarajal border on Sunday to demand tighter border enforcement, hours after a floating barrier broke in rough seas.
Mobilization to the Tarajal border
On Sunday, 20 September 2026, thousands of residents took part in a demonstration in Ceuta to demand increased border security and defend the Spanish sovereignty of the autonomous city. The mobilization commenced around 12:00, departing from assembly points including the Chorrillo and Juan Carlos I esplanades, situated approximately three kilometres from the border with Morocco. While initial gathering points recorded over 200 participants carrying flags of Spain, Ceuta, and the European Union, the column expanded into several thousand people as it advanced across the city. A concurrent rally of hundreds of motorcyclists joined the demonstrators along the route towards the Tarajal frontier.
The demonstration proceeded under a security detail comprising National Police vehicles and military personnel. The route directed marchers through the El Príncipe district, the residential area housing the highest concentration of Moroccan residents in Ceuta. Women accounted for a majority of the participants along the peaceful march, which concluded near the Tarajal breakwater and adjacent beach.

Neighbourhood federation demands and slogans
The demonstration was organized by the Provincial Federation of Neighbourhood Associations (FPAV), which arranged to read a formal manifesto at El Tarajal outlining community concerns regarding territorial integrity. Representatives from the federation opened the march carrying a European flag, accompanied by a banner reading "S.O.S Ceuta invadida". The organizers framed the protest as an appeal for direct state intervention to safeguard the local border.
Throughout the procession, participants chanted slogans targeted at both local administration and national government leadership. Chants directed at the Government Delegate in Ceuta included calls for immediate resignation, specifically "delegado, dimisión" and "Tirano, canalla, tú no eres caballa". Demonstrators also focused on Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska, shouting "Sánchez, a prisión", "Ceuta será la tumba del sanchismo", and "Marlaska, canalla, defiende a los caballas". Additional chants repeated across the crowd included "invasores, expulsión" and "nuestros derechos, ¿dónde están?".
Barrier damage and July crossing context
The mobilization followed earlier border tensions, notably a mass crossing event recorded at the Tarajal perimeter on 30 July 2026. Following that incident, Spanish authorities heightened territorial surveillance and deployed a floating pneumatic barrier in the adjacent sea to block unauthorised maritime access around the Tarajal breakwater.
On Sunday morning, authorities confirmed that this maritime barrier had ruptured in the section closest to the breakwater. The rupture occurred as a direct result of rough weather conditions, characterized by strong coastal winds and heavy wave swells. Spanish security forces maintained reinforced surveillance protocols along the coastal sector while the demonstration unfolded near the damaged barrier.
