A Romanian hiker from Cluj County suffered multiple severe injuries on Saturday after falling 30 meters down a rock face in the Ceahlău Massif. The accident occurred at an elevation of 1,250 meters in Neamț County, within a steep mountain corridor situated between Polița cu Ariniș and the Duruitoarea waterfall. The injured man, aged between 40 and 42, was visiting the area on holiday with his wife and children. While some accounts indicated that his family remained at the Dochia chalet while he hiked alone, others noted relatives were walking nearby when he lost his footing. Other tourists who were trekking toward the waterfall witnessed the fall from the trail and contacted emergency dispatchers for assistance.

Five-hour technical rope rescue

The Neamț mountain rescue service mobilized two separate teams from the Salvamont Dochia and Salvamont Durău operational bases to reach the accident site. Rescuers navigated rugged mountain terrain and performed technical rope rappels down the rock wall to access the casualty. After stabilizing the injured man, teams carried him across steep mountain paths to an extraction point established near the Poiana Prințului mountain base. Because the surrounding terrain was heavily forested, ground teams signaled the designated landing zone using smoke canisters.

The intervention to extract the victim from the dangerous area and the evacuation, which required multiple rope lowering maneuvers, lasted five hours.

An emergency medical helicopter, designated ESA 350 from the SMURD Iași Aeromedical Operating Point, touched down in the marked clearing to initiate medical evacuation.

Medical stabilization and trauma assessment

Flight medical crews conducted an on-site assessment to stabilize the patient for air transport to the Emergency Reception Unit in Târgu Mureș. The hiker remained conscious and cooperative throughout the retrieval, despite sustaining extensive trauma across his head and limbs. Medical personnel immobilized multiple closed displaced fractures on both his upper and lower extremities and confirmed his hemodynamic and respiratory stability before departure.

At the time of arrival and pickup, the patient was conscious, cooperative, hemodynamically and respiratory stable, normoglycemic, with retrograde amnesia. He presented a traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness, contused wounds in the right temporo-parietal region and right frontal half, a closed displaced fracture of the right clavicle, a closed displaced fracture of the right wrist, a closed displaced fracture of the lower third of the left calf, and a closed displaced fracture of the left ankle.

Upon arrival at the emergency hospital in Târgu Mureș, on-duty medical teams admitted the patient for specialized examinations and surgical interventions.

Carpathian rescue operations surge

The emergency intervention in the Ceahlău Massif unfolded during a period of high operational activity for emergency teams across the Romanian Carpathians. Salvamont România reported that mountain rescue units nationwide responded to 37 separate emergency calls within a single 24-hour period. The highest volume of emergency calls originated from mountainous areas in Prahova, Bihor, and Brașov counties. Mountain rescue teams maintain regular patrols along high-traffic routes as tourist numbers increase during the late summer season.
