Carpentry workshop destroyed in overnight fire in Niederzissen, no injuries reported
A blaze broke out at a carpentry business in Niederzissen, Rhineland-Palatinate, in the early hours of 20 June. The building was completely gutted, but no one was hurt.
The fire
A fire erupted overnight at a carpentry in an industrial area of Niederzissen, in the Ahrweiler district. Flames engulfed the entire building, and a large section of its sheet-metal roof collapsed. Thick smoke was visible from a distance, and the fire department warned residents of possible health risks.
Keep windows and doors closed.
Firefighting operation
Roughly 115 firefighters were deployed to bring the blaze under control. A special firefighting robot was also used. The robot's advantage, according to the fire chief, was its ability to drive directly into the flames.
It can go straight into the fire.
An excavator was called in to remove remaining pieces of the collapsed roof so that firefighters could douse the last embers. The operation was expected to continue into the early morning hours.
Casualties and cause
No injuries were reported, despite the severity of the fire. Police said the cause and the extent of the damage could not yet be determined and remained under investigation.
