Rubin Colwill strikes in 98th minute as Cardiff City hold Wrexham to 1-1 draw
Rubin Colwill scored a free-kick in the eighth minute of added time at Cardiff City Stadium to cancel out Kieffer Moore's early strike and earn Cardiff City a 1-1 draw.
Early breakthrough and missed opportunities
Wrexham opened the scoring in the third minute of their Championship fixture at Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff entered the match with defensive injuries to Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor, and Will Fish, prompting manager Brian Barry-Murphy to move left-back Joel Bagan into central defence alongside Gabriel Osho. The hosts failed to clear a Lewis O'Brien free-kick beyond Danny Imray, whose pass forward caught the back line out of position. Osho played Kieffer Moore onside, and the striker ran past Bagan to shoot over goalkeeper Nathan Trott. The strike was Moore's seventh goal against Cardiff and his first goal for Wrexham since February, ending an 11-match scoreless run.
Wrexham maintained pressure throughout the first half, testing Trott when Callum Doyle directed a header towards goal. Moore came close to adding a second when his header from an O'Brien cross hit the crossbar, while Imray forced another stop from Trott. In total, Wrexham produced 18 attempts on goal, including eight on target, and struck the woodwork twice during the match.

Cardiff response and tactical changes
Cardiff gradually created opportunities midway through the opening period after Zak Vyner hit a short back pass, forcing Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to clear under pressure from Yousef Salech. Republic of Ireland international Jack Moylan, making his Championship debut for Cardiff following his summer transfer from Lincoln, fired an effort over the bar. Patterson also stopped a shot from Cian Ashford following a sequence of passes.
Wrexham threatened again immediately after the interval when Ollie Rathbone passed inside to Doyle, whose near-post effort was saved by Trott's foot. Trott subsequently denied Nathan Broadhead before Doyle struck the goalpost with a long-range drive. Seeking an equaliser, Barry-Murphy introduced substitutes Rubin Colwill and Joel Colwill just after the hour mark. Rubin Colwill had started on the bench due to an ankle injury.
I thought he had a big impact on a big game.
Stoppage-time equaliser
Wrexham held their lead until the final moments of added time. The fourth official indicated six minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half. In the 96th minute, Wrexham midfielder George Dobson committed a foul on Joel Colwill near the edge of the penalty area. In the 98th minute, Rubin Colwill took the resulting free-kick, striking the ball over the defensive wall and past Patterson into the net.
- Kieffer Moore scores the opening goal for Wrexham.
- Anthony Patterson beats Yousef Salech to the ball following a short Zak Vyner back pass.
- Cardiff introduce brothers Rubin Colwill and Joel Colwill as substitutes.
- Rubin Colwill scores the equalising free-kick after Joel Colwill is fouled by George Dobson.
The draw was watched by a crowd of 31,421 spectators, which included 2,500 travelling Wrexham supporters. The attendance was the highest recorded for a league match at the Cardiff City Stadium since the 2018–2019 season.
Post-match reaction and table standings
Following the final whistle, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed frustration over his team's inability to convert chances into a decisive lead and questioned the additional time played.
We've had chances to kill the game off. We haven't taken them, the keeper's made saves, but we haven't really made him make a top-class save.
Parkinson noted that failing to secure victories from leading positions was a recurring issue for Wrexham, who dropped 24 points from winning positions in the 2025–2026 Championship campaign. The result leaves Wrexham without a league win in Cardiff since 1992, as Cardiff, Wrexham, and Swansea compete in the second tier together for the first time since the 1980–1981 season.
