A 68-year-old driver in a Mercedes travelled several hundred meters through a pedestrian street in northern Hesse on Friday morning, injuring eight people before colliding with a department store.
Collision in pedestrian zone
On Friday morning, 21 August 2026, between 9:00 and 9:30, a Mercedes drove at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the northern Hessian town of Hofgeismar. Witnesses first noticed the 68-year-old driver experiencing physical distress near a pedestrian crossing on Mühlenstraße. When bystanders attempted to speak with him, the car suddenly accelerated and moved unbraked for several hundred meters through the busy pedestrian area. The vehicle struck multiple pedestrians and destroyed outdoor retail stands, leaving table tops, seating cushions, display shelves, and buckets of children's street chalk scattered across the street. The car eventually stopped after colliding directly into the display window and exterior wall of a department store.

The North Hesse Police Headquarters reported that eight pedestrians suffered injuries, primarily abrasions, contusions, and shock. Paramedics provided treatment on site and transported four of the injured pedestrians to nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure. Police officials noted that none of the pedestrians were reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
Municipal response and town precautions

Interior minister confirms medical cause
Following initial investigations, regional authorities and the North Hesse Police Headquarters ruled out an intentional act. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck announced that all collected evidence indicated the incident resulted from a sudden medical emergency experienced by the driver.
According to all information available to me, the event in Hofgeismar is to be assumed to be a tragic accident resulting from a medical emergency.
Poseck extended his thoughts to the eight injured pedestrians and to local residents who experienced distress during the incident, wishing everyone a rapid and complete recovery.
