Cape Verde holds Uruguay to 2-2 draw, stays in contention for World Cup last 32
Cape Verde fought back to draw 2-2 with Uruguay in Miami, earning a second straight point in Group 8 and keeping their maiden World Cup knockout dream within reach.
Historic goal and early lead
Cape Verde, appearing at their first World Cup, took a shock lead in the 21st minute at Hard Rock Stadium. Kevin Pina curled a direct free-kick from 25 metres through a two-man wall and past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, scoring the country's first ever goal at a men's World Cup finals. The small island nation had already held Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opener, and the early strike sent their supporters into delirium.
Uruguay turns it around before the break
Uruguay, coached by Marcelo Bielsa, responded with sustained pressure. In the 44th minute, a cross from the left was headed against the right post by a defender, and Maxi Araújo pounced on the rebound to head into an empty net. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Araújo turned provider, nodding the ball across the six-yard box for Canobbio to tap in from close range. Uruguay went into the interval leading 2-1.
A defensive gift and a dramatic finish
Three minutes after coming on as a substitute, Élio Varela capitalised on a calamitous mix-up in the 61st minute. Defender Matías Olivera attempted a back-pass, but goalkeeper Muslera had rushed well outside his area. Varela intercepted the loose ball and rolled it into the unguarded net for 2-2. Uruguay pushed for a winner and had a goal by Araújo disallowed for offside after a VAR check in the 68th minute, but Cape Verde held firm.
