Cape Verde, smallest nation ever to qualify, reaches World Cup round of 32 unbeaten
The tiny archipelago nation, with a population of just over 500,000, finished second in Group 8 after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia and Spain's win over Uruguay.
A historic first
Cape Verde, with a population of around 500,000, became the smallest country by population ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage. In their debut appearance at the tournament, the Blue Sharks navigated Group 8 without defeat, drawing 0-0 with Spain, 2-2 with Uruguay, and 0-0 with Saudi Arabia. The qualification was sealed on 27 June when Spain's 1-0 victory over Uruguay, combined with Cape Verde's goalless draw against Saudi Arabia, sent them through as group runners-up.
Tense wait on the pitch
The drama unfolded in real time. Cape Verde's match ended about three minutes before the Spain-Uruguay clash. Players and staff huddled around mobile phones on the pitch, watching the final seconds. When the final whistle confirmed Uruguay's defeat, the squad erupted. There were tears, embraces, and wild celebrations both on the field and in the stands.
There were tears of pride and joy everywhere. It was perhaps the moment of the tournament so far.
The architects behind the run
Head coach Pedro "Bubista" Brito, who lit a cigar in the dressing room during the party, rejected the fairy tale label.
At 40, goalkeeper Vozinha produced a standout performance in the opening draw against Spain. His mother was repeatedly shown on camera during the qualification, a human touch that resonated widely. The squad, 14 of its 26 members born outside Cape Verde, many from Rotterdam, reflects a deliberate long-term strategy by the federation to tap the diaspora. It's not a fairy tale. It's the result of work, organization and team spirit.
A giant waiting in the last 32
Cape Verde's reward is a meeting with world champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi. The encounter promises to be a stern test, but the team has already exceeded all expectations. Saudi Arabia, coached by Georgios Donis, finished bottom of the group on goal difference, eliminated alongside Uruguay.
