Canada eliminates South Africa with stoppage-time goal to reach first World Cup last 16
Stephen Eustaquio scored in the second minute of added time to give Canada a 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium, sending the co-hosts to the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
Tense stalemate in Inglewood
The match in Inglewood, California, drew 69,237 fans but produced few clear chances through 90 minutes. Both sides, each making their first appearance in a World Cup knockout round, played cautiously. South Africa, the underdog from Group A, sat deep and slowed the tempo. Canada controlled midfield and threatened almost exclusively from set pieces.
In the 17th minute, Jonathan David volleyed a corner just wide. Five minutes later, Derek Cornelius headed weakly at goalkeeper Ronwen Williams from a free kick. Canada’s best first-half moment came in the 44th minute when a corner found Moise Bombito, whose header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba. Two follow-up shots were blocked, and the teams went to the break at 0-0.
South Africa resists, Canada pushes
South Africa’s Williams made two vital saves after the interval. In the 65th minute he won a duel with Tani Oluwaseyi, and in the 78th he turned away a sharp-angled drive from David. At the other end, Maxime Crepeau dealt comfortably with long-range efforts from Oswin Appollis and other South African counters.
As regulation time ticked down, extra time seemed inevitable. Possession remained even, but Canada kept pressing around the area.

The decisive blow
Two minutes into stoppage time, a poor clearance by a South African defender fell to Stephen Eustaquio. The 29-year-old, who plays for Los Angeles FC, struck from 16 meters and beat Williams with a precise shot. Eustaquio’s fifth international goal sent the Canadian bench into celebration.
Match official Joao Pinheiro of Portugal then had to calm a brief confrontation near Crepeau’s goal before blowing the final whistle moments later. Canada held on for the 1-0 win, eliminating a South African side that had upset South Korea in the group stage.
A first for Canada, and a Houston date
Canada reached the last 16 in their fourth World Cup appearance. South Africa fell short in their third. The co-hosts, who played their group matches north of the border, travelled to the United States for this knockout fixture and now await the winner of Tuesday’s Netherlands–Morocco match in Monterrey. That quarterfinal will take place on Saturday in Houston.
