Canada beats South Africa 1-0 in first knockout match of the 2026 World Cup
Stephen Eustáquio's late goal sent Canada past South Africa in the inaugural round-of-32 match at the 2026 World Cup in Los Angeles.
Historic first for both sides
Canada and South Africa opened the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup with a match that, while low on pre-game glamour, carried weight for both nations. South Africa had never advanced beyond the group stage in three previous appearances (1998, 2002, 2010). Canada, a co-host alongside the United States and Mexico, had not won a World Cup match since its debut in 1986 and was playing its first ever knockout fixture. The 1-0 result in Los Angeles gave the Canadians their maiden victory in a World Cup elimination round and made South Africa the first team to exit at this new 32-team stage.
Tactical battle in Los Angeles
The contest pitted two contrasting styles against each other. South Africa, under coach Hugo Broos, typically builds from the back through goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and the centre-backs, then looks to release pace in behind. Canada, managed by Jesse Marsch, relies on a high, aggressive press and physicality to force turnovers. Both sides adjusted for the stakes. South Africa avoided the risky short exits that had cost them goals against Mexico in the group opener, keeping the full-backs deeper and circulating more horizontally. Canada allowed Williams and the defenders more time on the ball and focused on cutting off the interior passing lanes. The result was a cagey affair with few clear chances and a premium placed on risk avoidance.
Our team has heart, it's a group that will always give everything. With Switzerland I thought about switching to a back five at halftime to close the game. I should have done it. I'm grateful for all the energy our fans have given us but now we have to head to Los Angeles. Still, we are where we wanted to be, which is the knockout stage.
Eustáquio the hero
Canada entered the match without injured midfielder Ismaël Koné and with star winger Alphonso Davies again starting on the bench. Marsch restored Stephen Eustáquio to the starting eleven to stabilise a midfield that had struggled against Switzerland. The Porto midfielder delivered the decisive moment, scoring the only goal when the game seemed destined for extra time. South Africa had its own threats, with Oswin Appollis cutting inside from the left and Makgopa offering a physical reference, but the Bafana Bafana could not find a way through.
What comes next
Canada will face the winner of Netherlands vs Morocco in the round of 16. South Africa exits with the consolation of a historic group-stage breakthrough and a broader African success story: nine of the continent's ten representatives reached the knockout phase. The tournament continues on Monday with Brazil vs Japan, Germany vs Paraguay, and Netherlands vs Morocco.
