Cabo Verde reaches World Cup last 32 for the first time; Portugal also books spot without playing
Cabo Verde secured a historic place in the 2026 World Cup round of 32 after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, while Spain topped Group H by beating Uruguay 1-0. Portugal also qualified without playing.
Cabo Verde’s debut World Cup campaign will continue into the knockout phase after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in Houston, combined with Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay, gave the African nation second place in Group H. The result means Cabo Verde becomes the smallest country by population ever to reach the last 32 of a World Cup.
There are no easy games at the World Cup. Obviously it will be a difficult game, but it will be difficult for both teams – we have to do our part, demonstrate courage and look for the victory. We always said we would reach the third matchday with a chance to qualify, and here we are.
Spain finished top of the group with seven points after Álex Baena’s 42nd-minute goal sank Uruguay. Cabo Verde ended on three points from three draws, while Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, both on two points, were eliminated. Portugal also mathematically confirmed their place in the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams even before their final group match against Colombia. Cabo Verde will face reigning world champions Argentina on 3 July.
