
Two dead, 14 injured after runaway bus hits stop near Agualva-Cacém station
A Carris Metropolitana bus struck a stop near the Agualva-Cacém train station on Tuesday morning, killing two women and injuring 14 others, four seriously.
The incident
A Carris Metropolitana bus became uncontrolled and struck a bus stop near the tunnel access to the Agualva-Cacém railway station in Sintra, on the morning of 7 July 2026. The alert was raised at 09:42, with emergency services describing the event as a road traffic collision involving pedestrians. The bus hit people waiting at the stop, causing immediate fatalities and multiple injuries.
Casualties
Two women, aged between 30 and 40, died at the scene, according to the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM). Fourteen other people were injured, four of them seriously. The injured were transported to hospital for treatment. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Emergency response
By 10:40, 35 firefighters from Agualva-Cacém, Belas, Queluz, and Algueirão-Mem Martins were on site, supported by 16 vehicles including two Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicles from Amadora-Sintra and S. Francisco Xavier hospitals. A mobile psychological emergency intervention unit was also dispatched. The Public Security Police (PSP) sent its Road Accident Investigation Brigade to the scene.
Investigation underway
The circumstances that caused the bus to become uncontrolled are still under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether mechanical failure, driver error, or other factors were involved. The area around the station was cordoned off while rescue operations and the initial investigation took place.
