Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in two minutes and Maxim De Cuyper added a goal and forced an own goal as Brighton defeated Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
First-half scoring run at the Amex
Brighton began their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 victory over ten-man Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. Fabian Hürzeler's side took command of the fixture within the opening half-hour, scoring four goals before the interval. Villa, who entered the season having won the Europa League in May and the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, started with early possession. In the fifth minute, Emiliano Buendía dispossessed a Brighton defender and drove toward goal, but his shot missed the bottom corner by inches. Brighton punished the miss on eight minutes when Villa defender Pau Torres played a blind pass across his own penalty area. Maxim De Cuyper took possession and struck the post, with the ball rebounding into the net off Victor Lindelöf for an own goal.
Rapid goals and a debut red card
Brighton doubled their advantage in the 18th minute when Georginio Rutter made a timed run behind the Villa defence and delivered a low cut-back for De Cuyper to score from six yards out. Jack Hinshelwood increased the lead to 3-0 on the half-hour mark, converting from close range after De Cuyper's left-wing cross was knocked back across goal by Diego Gómez. Only 60 seconds later, Yasin Ayari tackled João Gomes inside the Villa penalty area, allowing Hinshelwood to score his second goal of the afternoon. Gomes, who joined Villa for £38 million from Wolves, saw his debut end in the 40th minute. Already carrying a yellow card, the midfielder kicked out at Rutter and received a straight red card after a video assistant referee review.

Summer squad turnover and omissions
The result followed significant turnover in Unai Emery's squad across the summer transfer window. Villa entered the new campaign having sold four starters from the eleven that defeated Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final. The club received £117 million from Chelsea for forward Morgan Rogers, alongside £51 million for defender Ezri Konsa and £35 million for midfielder Youri Tielemans, while Lucas Digne also completed a transfer. Striker Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez were left out of the matchday squad entirely, with Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki identified as Martínez's potential replacement. Watkins remains targeted by Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, and Emery replied "Silence" when asked if the striker's exclusion meant his departure.

Match statistics and response
First-half match statistics showed the extent of Villa's defensive difficulties. The visitors recorded 38% possession, conceded ten shot attempts, and allowed 2.96 expected goals before half-time. Midfielders John McGinn and Ross Barkley struggled to stem Brighton attacks, while new signing Johan Manzambi remained an unused substitute and young forward Brian Madjo was omitted from the squad. Villa also entered the season without midfielder Amadou Onana following an injury sustained at the World Cup. Although Villa prevented further scoring during a scoreless second half, Emery noted the requirement for improved application as the team prepares for the Champions League group stage.
We have a long season ahead of us, and we need players who are ready to give their best.
Villa will next prepare for their upcoming Champions League campaign following their top-four league finish and Europa League title last season.
