Putin and Zelensky call Trump on 80th birthday to push Ukraine talks and signal Iran deal is close
Both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky phoned Donald Trump on his 80th birthday, turning personal greetings into high-stakes diplomatic talks on ending the war and a U.S.-Iran accord.
Birthday diplomacy
Donald Trump’s 80th birthday on 14 June 2026 became an unexpected diplomatic junction. Within hours of each other, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held separate telephone calls with the U.S. president, pushing forward parallel efforts on the war in Ukraine and a draft memorandum with Iran.
The Kremlin and Ukraine’s presidency later released carefully worded readouts, each framing the exchanges as constructive. The calls were the first publicly acknowledged direct contacts between the three leaders in months, and they immediately drew attention to the wider geopolitical landscape.
Putin’s 55-minute call
Putin’s conversation with Trump lasted about 55 minutes, according to Kremlin foreign-policy aide Yuri Ushakov. Moscow said the tone was cordial and the bulk of the time was spent on the conflict in Ukraine and the prospects for a negotiated settlement.
The conversation focused on the draft memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. Donald Trump said a deal is close.
Ushakov added that Trump had reiterated the need to halt hostilities and expressed willingness to use his influence with European allies and Kyiv ahead of upcoming international diplomatic meetings. The Kremlin also renewed Putin’s standing invitation for a direct meeting with Zelensky, saying the Ukrainian president would be “welcome in Moscow” if he wished for a face-to-face encounter.
Zelensky’s half-hour exchange
Shortly before or after the Moscow call, Zelensky spoke with Trump for around 30 minutes, according to the Ukrainian presidency. Dmytro Lytvyn, the presidential communications adviser, described the talk as “quite significant, spanning topics from birthday greetings to diplomacy and war/peace.”
I just had a fantastic conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. I wished President Trump a happy birthday and we discussed in detail many important issues, including, of course, peace. I wished President Trump success, especially in his efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. I also thanked him for all the support America is providing to Ukraine and, importantly, we recall with gratitude every step of this support, from Javelins to Patriots.
Zelensky later posted on Telegram that he had briefed Trump on the latest battlefield developments and how Ukraine’s position had strengthened. The two leaders agreed to continue the discussion at the G7 summit, and Zelensky noted they had “some good ideas that could help bring peace closer and protect lives.”
Iran deal and the Beirut attack
Beyond the birthday calls, Trump himself raised the stakes with a lengthy post on Truth Social. He linked progress on Iran to an attack earlier the same day on Beirut, urging restraint from all sides.
This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, especially on such a special day, when we are so close to a peace agreement with Iran. Israel has the right to defend itself from threats, but the attack it responded to was limited in scope and insignificant, no one was hurt or killed, and it should not disrupt this important process. We are very close to a deal that will bring peace to the region, including Lebanon, and all parties should desist. There should be no more attacks by Israel in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by other factions, including Hezbollah, against Israel. This could be the start of a long and wonderful peace: let’s not ruin it!
The U.S. special envoys on Iran, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to return to Russia soon, Ushakov confirmed, suggesting the Iranian track is moving in parallel with the Ukraine diplomacy.
