Bezzecchi fractures left collarbone in German GP qualifying crash, will undergo surgery in Italy
The Aprilia rider lost control at Turn 7 during Q2, sliding at high speed and missing both the Sprint race and Sunday's German Grand Prix.
The incident
Marco Bezzecchi's German Grand Prix weekend ended during Saturday's Q2 session when the Aprilia rider lost the rear of his bike at the fast, downhill Turn 7 of the Sachsenring. He was thrown from the machine at a speed reported between 140 km/h and 160 km/h, tumbling through the gravel trap and remaining motionless for several moments. He eventually rose to his feet and returned to the garage, visibly in pain and holding his left wrist.
The crash marked Bezzecchi's second heavy fall in two race weekends, coming just two weeks after a similar-looking accident at Assen in the Netherlands. While he walked away from the Dutch incident, the German crash produced a more serious outcome: a complete, displaced fracture of the left clavicle, confirmed by X-rays taken at the circuit medical centre under the supervision of MotoGP medical director Angel Charte.
Medical diagnosis and surgery plan
Aprilia issued an official statement confirming the extent of the injury: a complete and displaced fracture of the left clavicle that requires surgical intervention. Dr Franco Perona, Chief Medical Officer of Lifenet for Aprilia Racing, told Sky Sport that Bezzecchi is in stable condition and that surgery is the recommended path to ensure the quickest possible recovery.
He is fine, and I repeat, he is fine, and this solution adopted is the best for everyone so that he can find his best performance again as soon as possible. Dr Charte diagnosed the fracture of the left clavicle, a displaced fracture, which requires immediate surgery that will be performed in Italy by Dr Porcellini.
The operation is scheduled to take place in Italy under the care of Dr Giuseppe Porcellini, with Bezzecchi travelling back from Germany as soon as possible, expected on the same day as the crash. Perona indicated the surgery would likely occur within 24 to 48 hours.
Immediate consequences
Bezzecchi was classified eighth on the qualifying grid but did not take part in Saturday afternoon's Sprint race and will miss the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The absence costs him valuable championship ground: entering the weekend, the Italian sat second in the riders' standings behind Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin, who now has a clear opportunity to extend his lead.
Following the crash, Marco Bezzecchi was transported to the circuit medical centre where he underwent an X-ray examination that revealed a complete and displaced fracture of the left clavicle. The type of fracture requires surgery to ensure the best possible recovery, which will be performed in Italy by Dr Giuseppe Porcellini. Marco Bezzecchi expects to return to Italy as soon as possible.
Before the crash, Bezzecchi had already admitted to physical discomfort arriving in Germany, telling media on Thursday he was still carrying pain from the previous round and would assess his condition session by session. The German weekend now becomes his fourth consecutive Grand Prix beset by physical problems or setbacks.
Qualifying results and grid
Marc Marquez claimed pole position for the German Grand Prix with a lap of 1:19.041 on his Ducati. His brother Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) qualified second, just 61 thousandths of a second slower, with Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) completing an all-Ducati front row, 0.147 seconds off pole.
Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) heads the second row alongside teammate Ai Ogura and Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo. Franco Morbidelli (VR46) qualified seventh, ahead of the non-starting Bezzecchi and championship leader Jorge Martin, who lines up ninth. Pedro Acosta (KTM) rounded out the top ten, with Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati) down in eleventh and Jack Miller (Yamaha Pramac) twelfth.
- Bezzecchi crashes at Turn 7 during Q2, slides into gravel at 140-160 km/h
- Rider returns to pit garage unaided but visibly in pain, holding left wrist
- X-ray at circuit medical centre confirms complete, displaced left clavicle fracture
- Aprilia issues official statement: surgery required, Bezzecchi to return to Italy immediately
- Expected surgery by Dr Giuseppe Porcellini (within 24-48 hours of crash)
- British Grand Prix at Silverstone — earliest possible return to racing
Recovery and next race
With the summer break following the German round, Bezzecchi has approximately four weeks to recover before the championship resumes at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 9 August. Whether he will be fit to compete remains uncertain; the surgical intervention, the bone's healing timeline, and his ability to manage pain and strength through a race weekend will determine his participation. The break in the calendar at least removes an immediate race he must miss beyond Germany.
He was very confident in recent days. We hope everything resolves for the best.
