
Two serious traffic accidents in Berlin on Friday: an 8-year-old girl and a 58-year-old cyclist injured
An 8-year-old girl suffered a broken leg in a collision with a cyclist in Friedrichshagen, while a 58-year-old female cyclist underwent emergency surgery after a lorry ran over her arm in Friedrichshain.
First accident: child hit on cycle path
A serious collision occurred on Friday at around 17:35 in Berlin-Friedrichshagen. An 8-year-old girl was crossing the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Fürstenwalder Damm and Müggelseedamm when she stepped onto the adjacent cycle path and was struck by a 60-year-old cyclist. The girl sustained a broken leg and was admitted to hospital for inpatient treatment. The cyclist was uninjured. Police have assigned a special traffic offences unit to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
The child suffered a leg fracture and required stationary treatment in hospital.
The incident took place on the cycle path along Fürstenwalder Damm. According to police, the girl was using the pedestrian crossing and then walked onto the cross-running cycle path where the collision happened. The cyclist, aged 60, remained at the scene.
Second accident: lorry runs over cyclist's arm
Around midday on Friday, a 58-year-old female cyclist was seriously injured on Warschauer Strasse in Berlin-Friedrichshain. She was riding on the cycle path towards Oberbaumbrücke and attempted to overtake other cyclists. When she swerved onto the road carriageway marking, a 33-year-old lorry driver approaching from behind hit her. The woman fell, and the lorry's wheel rolled over her arm.
Rescue workers had to lift the vehicle's front axle to free the woman.
She was taken to hospital with a suspected arm fracture and underwent emergency surgery. The lorry driver stopped after the accident. The road was closed in the direction of Oberbaumbrücke between Frankfurter Tor and Kopernikusstrasse while the accident was recorded. The police are investigating the exact sequence of events.
Investigation ongoing
Both incidents are being investigated by specialist police units. In the first case, a unit for traffic offences is looking into the cause, while in the second, officers are reconstructing the accident. No charges have been reported yet.
