Two separate knife attacks in Berlin within 24 hours left five men injured, one critically, as police launched investigations into the overnight violence.
Attack on Kronprinzenbrücke
Around midnight on 1 August, a dispute among four men on the Kronprinzenbrücke in Berlin-Mitte escalated into a violent assault. A 57-year-old man struck a peer of the same age with his fist and a glass bottle on the back of the head, then attacked him and his 57-year-old companion with a knife. The first victim suffered injuries to his ear, hand, and face; the second sustained facial wounds. Both men received first aid from police officers at the scene and were later treated as outpatients at a hospital.
The suspect fled but was identified by the victims, who knew his name. After obtaining a judicial search warrant, officers located him at his apartment and seized several knives. He was taken into temporary custody for identification procedures and then released. His companion, who was present during the altercation, was not involved in the physical attack, according to a police spokesperson.
Stabbing in Schöneberg
In the early hours of 2 August, a separate dispute in the Schöneberg district left three men injured. A 32-year-old sustained stab wounds and was initially in a critical condition, police said. Two other men, aged 26 and 28, were taken to hospital with head injuries. Officers detained three suspects but released them later the same day. The circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear.
Police response and investigation
Both cases are being treated as suspected dangerous bodily harm. In the Mitte incident, a specialist unit has taken over the investigation. The Schöneberg case is also under active inquiry, though no further details on a possible motive have been released. The two attacks, occurring roughly 24 hours apart in different parts of the capital, are not believed to be connected.
