Bayern Munich signs Germany defender Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt for reported €55 million
The 23-year-old, who was Germany's starting left-back at the 2026 World Cup, joins the Bundesliga champions on a contract through June 2031, providing much-needed cover for injury-plagued Alphonso Davies.
Transfer completed
Bayern Munich announced the signing of left-back Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday. The 23-year-old signed a contract through June 2031, filling the gap left by Raphaël Guerreiro's departure. Multiple sources report a transfer fee of €55 million ($63 million), with €50 million fixed and €5 million in performance-related bonuses. Brown becomes the second summer arrival after Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari.
Brown's meteoric rise
Born in Amberg, Bavaria, to a German mother and an American father, Brown began his professional career at 1. FC Nürnberg in 2022. He moved to Frankfurt in 2024 for just €3.5 million and quickly established himself, making 75 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists. In the 2025/26 season he captained the side against Bayern and drew praise for neutralizing Lamine Yamal in the Champions League.
Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world. It means so much to me to have the chance to play for this club, and it fills me with pride. I also come from Bavaria, which makes it even more special.
- Signs first professional contract with 1. FC Nürnberg

- Signs for Bayern Munich on a five-year deal worth €55m
World Cup 2026 catalyst
Despite Germany's shock penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 16, Brown was among the few players to emerge with an enhanced reputation. He started every match and scored on his tournament debut against Curaçao. Bayern's board member for sport, Max Eberl, said: "He made his mark at the World Cup and showed why we've been looking at him for a while." The player later stressed that conversations with coach Vincent Kompany were decisive: "Kompany in particular showed me how he sees me and my development and absolutely convinced me."
Squad implications and Davies' future
The signing is widely seen as a response to Alphonso Davies' persistent injury troubles. The Canadian missed most of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with a cruciate ligament tear and other muscular issues, forcing coach Vincent Kompany to deploy midfielders at left-back. Brown's arrival provides a reliable alternative and direct competition. Reports suggest Bayern would only consider offers for Davies if an exceptionally lucrative bid materialises. Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche acknowledged the loss: "Nene has made impressive progress at Eintracht Frankfurt. We obviously would have liked him to stay with us, but he also expressed a desire to take the next step in his career."
Reaction
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen described Brown as a fast, dynamic player who "fits perfectly at FC Bayern" and underlined the club's desire to bring in top young German talents early. The player himself called the move a dream come true, adding that returning to his home state of Bavaria made it even more meaningful.
