Polish president to push for permanent US base during Trump's 80th birthday UFC gala
President Karol Nawrocki will attend Donald Trump's 80th birthday celebration at the White House, using the non-official visit to press for a permanent American military presence in Poland as Washington signals force reductions in Europe.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki will travel to Washington on Sunday, 14 June, accepting an invitation to take part in the UFC Freedom 250 mixed martial arts gala on the White House South Lawn. The event marks both Trump's 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. The visit, described by aides as working in nature, will be built around a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders.
Security agenda overshadowed by troop cuts
Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau in the Polish president's chancellery, confirmed that the private conversation will focus on "fundamental matters of Polish security, bilateral relations and energy-economic cooperation." Top of the list is Poland's long-standing request for a permanent US military base. Defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said last week that he had handed the Pentagon an official proposal to establish such a facility.
The main reason is the 80th birthday celebration of the President of the United States, and let us see it as a kind of distinction for Poland that the Polish president is invited, which shows very good personal relations.
The security talks come as the New York Times reports, citing two senior European officials, that the United States plans to shrink its air and naval assets available for NATO operations in Europe. Under the draft cuts, the number of F-16 and F-15E fighters would fall from around 150 to 100, maritime patrol aircraft from 26 to 15, and all air-to-air refuelling tankers previously assigned to Europe would be withdrawn.
This is certainly a significant reduction, which is not unexpected. Documents like the National Security Strategy say black on white that Europe is only priority number four for the United States.
The Polish foreign minister said Europe must fill the gaps with its own contribution wherever possible. Przydacz stressed that the defence ministry, which has been working with the Pentagon on a new presence strategy for months, is the primary channel for these discussions.

After the official programme in Washington, President Nawrocki will extend his trip by several days, heading to Tampa, Florida. On Tuesday 16 June at 5:30 p.m. local time, he will meet the Polish-American community at the John Paul II Polish Center in Clearwater, a hub for cultural and religious life among emigrants.
Earlier, on Sunday 14 June, Nawrocki will attend a Mass at a Polish church in Silver Spring, Maryland, followed by a gathering with local Poles to discuss current challenges facing the diaspora. These meetings underscore the visit's dual purpose: reinforcing bilateral ties while rallying support among Polish voters abroad.

Event pageantry and protocol
UFC Freedom 250 will unfold on a temporary arena assembled on the South Lawn, with around 5,000 invited guests including politicians, veterans and public figures. A special lighting rig known as "The Claw" is being erected above the octagon, and fan zones around the White House will accommodate up to 85,000 spectators via large screens. The main bout of the evening is set to feature Georgian-Spanish fighter Ilia Topuria against American Justin Gaethje.
During the encounter Nawrocki will hand Trump two gifts: one personal, the other of a state nature. Przydacz said the presents were chosen to reflect the character of Polish-American relations and diplomatic protocol.
