Police fire warning shots in Azores after crowd attacks patrol vans during drug bust
Officers in Rabo de Peixe fired six warning shots after a crowd damaged four police vehicles following the arrest of eight drug trafficking suspects on São Miguel island.
Anti-drug operation and port confrontation
Officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) conducted an anti-drug operation late Thursday morning on 20 August 2026 at the fishing port of Rabo de Peixe, located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande on São Miguel island in the Azores. The police detained eight suspects caught in flagrante delicto, including two of three alleged ringleaders of a distribution network. Officers seized 1,110 doses of cocaine, 962 doses of hashish, and an unspecified quantity of cash connected to illicit drug sales. As the police contingent prepared to withdraw from the port, a crowd of hundreds of people surrounded the convoy. Individuals in the crowd threw stones, wooden beams, and metal drums directly at the departing police vehicles.

Escalation, warning shots, and investigation
To halt the projectile attacks and secure a departure route, officers discharged six warning shots into the air and deployed pepper spray. The assault resulted in damage to four police vehicles, though neither police officers nor civilians suffered physical injuries during the incident. Videos filmed by onlookers and posted to social networks captured scenes of crowds surrounding police vans while detained suspects sat inside under guard. The Ponta Delgada Police Division opened an inquiry and identified two suspects in connection with the attack. Investigators continue examining video recordings to determine the identities of other individuals involved in damaging state property.

Government and municipal response
Portugal's Ministry of Internal Administration issued a statement on Friday, 21 August 2026, condemning the confrontation and affirming institutional backing for the Azores Regional Command. Internal Administration Minister Luís Neves commended the responding officers for their conduct and reiterated the legal authority of state security forces.
Any attempt to intimidate or condition the actions of security forces is inadmissible. The authority of the State must be respected and these behaviors must receive a firm response, under the law.
Ribeira Grande Mayor Jaime Vieira, a former president of the Rabo de Peixe parish council, characterized the assault as a grave incident and called for sustained police action to curb drug distribution across the municipality. The Rabo de Peixe parish council, headed by Carlos Dias, expressed gratitude for the PSP operation while maintaining that the actions of a few individuals do not define the town. Dias called for an expanded and permanent police presence in designated high-risk areas to prioritize prevention and community safety.
Political debate over regional resources
The confrontation prompted political reactions across the Azores regarding security resources and drug prevention infrastructure. Regional coordinator for the ASPP/PSP police union Paulo Pires expressed solidarity with the operating units and argued that persistent shortages of personnel and equipment hinder policing in the Azores and mainland Portugal.
We are in a country where our people respect the PSP and the judicial and police authorities.
PS/Açores leader and Assembly of the Republic deputy Francisco César pledged to raise the region's lack of police personnel and drug treatment programmes when parliament convenes. Chega/Açores president José Pacheco declared that those who attack police must face individual legal responsibility without condemning the broader community. Bloco de Esquerda representatives in the regional assembly also urged comprehensive social interventions to address the underlying challenges facing the parish.
