Ayuso rejects official residence as scrutiny over 6.3 million euro penthouse continues
Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso dismissed calls for an official residence during a visit to San Martín de Valdeiglesias, defending her administration amid questions over a 6.3 million euro penthouse acquisition.
Rejection of official residence
Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso addressed reporters on 17 August 2026 during a tour of the Las Moradas de San Martín winery in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, a municipality affected by late July wildfires in the Sierra Oeste. Responding to inquiries about the regional administration's acquisition of a luxury penthouse in Chamberí, Ayuso declared that she has never requested institutional housing during her seven years in office. She asserted that she will not seek a government residence with regional elections approaching in seven to ten months. The property, valued at 6.3 million euros, was purchased by Planifica Madrid, a public enterprise under the regional Department of the Presidency, and sold within 24 hours of public disclosure. Ayuso stated that regional efforts remain focused on wildfire recovery and preparing Madrid for scheduled autumn events, referencing previous milestones such as securing the Formula 1 event and hosting the papal visit.
I have been president of the Community of Madrid for seven years and I have not needed or asked for it. I am not going to need it ten months before an election.
Clashes over ministerial housing and transparency
When pressed on whether regional authorities had provided adequate transparency regarding the 6.3 million euro property purchase, Ayuso defended her administration by comparing oversight of regional spending to that of the central government. She maintained that standard ministerial scrutiny is subject to an uneven standard. Ayuso argued that her explanations were sufficient given that twelve out of fifteen national ministers holding official housing do not publicly account for their accommodations.
- Ministers cited without public explanations
- 12 ministers
- Total ministers with official housing cited
- 15 ministers
Ayuso stated that questions surrounding her administration repeat settled matters while national cabinet members avoid public scrutiny over their living costs. Popular Party deputy secretary of institutional regeneration Cuca Gamarra backed the regional president on Monday, stating that Ayuso had already provided every required explanation regarding the property transaction and that no further information remained to be given.
Opposition demands and central government criticism
Opposition parties in the Assembly of Madrid rejected the explanations provided by the regional executive. The spokesperson for the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party in the regional assembly, Mar Espinar, demanded specific financial data and accused the regional administration of concealing the acquisition. Espinar noted that the 6.3 million euro penthouse was located opposite the residence of Ayuso's mother and stated that the transaction coincided with property listings by Ayuso's partner. Espinar described the regional government's justifications as unacceptable and called for full disclosure on public fund allocations.
The penthouse was bought secretly and it was done for a reason.
In response to the domestic scrutiny, Ayuso directed criticism toward Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the central government's management of border issues in the autonomous city of Ceuta. She criticized Sánchez for remaining on vacation at the La Mareta residence in Lanzarote during sixteen days of what she characterized as a tolerated border crisis. Ayuso alleged that Ceuta faces institutional strain, security concerns, and health hazards while Sánchez stays on leave without publishing the expenses associated with his holiday.
