Hormuz drones, Europe at 41.5

Trump tests Hormuz truce as Europe swelters and Venezuela counts quake losses

The past 12 hours brought a familiar modern mix: war risk at a chokepoint, lethal heat in rich countries, and a poor country searching for beds after the ground moved again. Diplomats signed papers in Washington, but armed groups and weather systems answered faster.

Australian man arrested at Bangkok airport after body of 17-year-old girl found in suitcase in Pattaya

A 46-year-old Australian man was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport on Friday evening after police discovered the body of a 17-year-old Thai girl inside a suitcase in Pattaya. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results before filing charges of intentional homicide and abduction of a minor for sexual purposes.

The arrest

The suspect, a 46-year-old Australian national, was taken into custody on the evening of 26 June at Suvarnabhumi international airport in Bangkok. Local media report he was attempting to purchase a ticket to Perth, Australia, when he was detained.

He continues to deny the charges and was placed in custody after interrogation.

The arrest followed a fast-moving investigation that began after the discovery of the teenager’s body earlier in the week.

CCTV footage

Security camera footage from a residential building in the tourist resort of Pattaya captured the suspect entering the premises accompanied by a 17‑year‑old Thai girl during the night of Wednesday 25 June to Thursday 26 June. One clip shows the pair waiting for a lift shortly after 03:30 on Thursday morning.

Hours later, the same cameras recorded the man leaving the building alone, carrying a large black suitcase which he loaded onto the back of a scooter. The footage has become a central piece of evidence.

The discovery

The suitcase was found on Thursday beside railway tracks near Pattaya’s Floating Market. Inside, officers discovered the body of the young woman with visible signs of violence, according to the Pattaya News.

Police are waiting for the autopsy results and other evidence before pressing charges of abduction of a minor with sexual purposes, intentional homicide, and concealment of a body.

— Pattaya police official

Investigators say the suspect provided information during questioning that led them to the location of the suitcase.

Suspect’s account

One local news outlet published excerpts of the interrogation in which the Australian reportedly admitted to the killing but claimed he acted in self‑defence, alleging the teenager threatened him with a knife. Addressing the victim’s parents, he said, “I’m sorry for what happened to your daughter, it was beyond my control.”

Police have not yet formally charged him, stressing they are still gathering evidence.

Next steps

Authorities in Pattaya are continuing to collect evidence to build a complete case file. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to a citizen detained in Thailand but declined to comment on the investigation.
