Romania's AUR refuses to back Mureșan cabinet until arrested candidate Călin Georgescu is freed

Parliamentary rejection and boycott terms

During a joint plenary session of the Romanian Parliament on Wednesday, 30 September, Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) leader George Simion announced that his party will refuse to vote for the proposed government led by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan. Addressing lawmakers from the rostrum, Simion stated that AUR will not endorse Mureșan or any other cabinet lineup until former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu is released from custody. Simion asserted that lawmakers elected on sovereignist party lists must reject the executive. He maintained that AUR deputies remained loyal to their voters and would not be bought or intimidated by external actors.

Allegations of bribery and political pressure

Simion used his parliamentary address to level explicit corruption allegations against political opponents and cabinet negotiators. The AUR leader asserted that votes during negotiations over temporary administrations had been traded on a black market for several hundred thousand euros per vote. He claimed that private jets were dispatched to track lawmakers and that television network owners were instructed to pressure or purchase parliamentarians. Simion announced that his party possessed video recordings documenting these alleged bargaining attempts, promising to broadcast the footage in subsequent episodes. Simion previously drew hostile coverage from Realitatea TV, an outlet owned by the family of Maricel Păcuraru, after AUR rejected an earlier executive headed by Veștea that was backed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Nicușor Dan.

The detention of Călin Georgescu

Simion's ultimatum directly follows legal proceedings against Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate who was placed into 30-day preventive custody by magistrates at the Bucharest Court of Appeal on Tuesday. Judicial authorities ordered the measure in a criminal case alleging fraud involving 1.1 million euros, with businessman Ionel Rusen also placed under preventive arrest. Simion stated from the podium that Georgescu had been arrested on Simion's birthday and was transferred to Central Arrest on Tuesday, just prior to the crucial parliamentary vote. The AUR president also claimed that political actors warned him that he would be the next target of state prosecutors. Simion rejected these warnings during his speech, insisting that his party would defend Georgescu, his family, and citizens seeking Romanian leadership.

Mathematical deficit for the Mureșan cabinet

The boycott announcement leaves the designated cabinet of Siegfried Mureșan short of the numerical backing required to assume power. The Romanian Parliament convened at 13:00 on Wednesday to conduct the investiture vote, which requires a minimum constitutional threshold of 233 votes to confirm the executive. The political bloc consisting of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) provides approximately 170 votes. With both the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and AUR refusing to vote for the proposed administration, the cabinet enters the vote without the legislative support necessary to reach the 233-seat requirement.
