Arthur Fils beats Flavio Cobolli in Cincinnati to reach first career Masters 1000 final
The 22-year-old defeated world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli in straight sets in Ohio, rising to 11th in the ATP rankings and setting up a final against Frances Tiafoe or Brandon Nakashima.
Semi-final victory over Cobolli
French player Arthur Fils advanced to his first career Masters 1000 final by defeating world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli on Saturday, 22 August 2026. The 22-year-old native of Essonne secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 1 hour and 7 minutes. Cobolli, who reached the final at Roland-Garros earlier in the season, struggled physically after contesting three-set matches in each of his four previous tournament rounds. Fils quickly established control from the baseline, using his forehand to counter the Italian. The win followed another rapid performance in the quarter-finals, where Fils defeated Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 4 minutes.

Weather delays and court performance
Lightning in the Ohio sky delayed the start of the semi-final and altered playing conditions on the court. When play began, Cobolli broke Fils in the Frenchman's second service game to take an early lead. Fils responded immediately by breaking back to level the opening set at 2-2. At 3-3, the right-handed Frenchman produced a forehand winner down the line, before securing another break to take a 5-3 lead and close out the set. Fils broke Cobolli's serve in the opening game of the second set, maintaining his advantage behind his first serve before sealing the victory and blowing a kiss to the spectators.
Fils explained the mental challenge caused by the weather disruption following the match.
You arrive on the court more nervous because it is a semi-final. The rain arrives, we wait, and when we return, the conditions are completely different. It was difficult, but I am happy with how I handled the situation.
French milestones and season recovery
The result makes Fils the youngest French finalist at a Masters 1000 tournament since Richard Gasquet reached the final in Toronto 20 years ago. Fils also became the first Frenchman to reach three Masters 1000 semi-finals in a single season since Guy Forget achieved the feat in 1991. These results follow a start to the 2026 season spent recovering from a stress fracture in his back sustained during Roland-Garros in 2025. His North American summer campaign also includes a quarter-final appearance at the Montreal Masters 1000, alongside Cincinnati victories over top-10 players Alex De Minaur, ranked eighth, and Cobolli.

Tournament final and ranking climb
The tournament run guarantees Fils an ascent in the ATP rankings, moving from 21st to 11th in the world. He enters Sunday's final seeking his second title of the 2026 season, following his victory at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona. In the Cincinnati final, Fils faces either Frances Tiafoe, ranked 23rd, or Brandon Nakashima, ranked 22nd. A victory would make Fils the first French player to win a Masters 1000 title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won in Toronto in August 2014. The final takes place one week before the US Open, where Fils previously reached the second round in 2023 and 2024.
