Arsenal sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in £51m deal to bolster defence
Arsenal have completed the transfer of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million plus add-ons on a four-year contract, reinforcing a backline depleted by injuries.
Transfer terms and contract structure
Arsenal completed the signing of England central defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on 21 August 2026. The Premier League champions agreed to pay an initial transfer fee of £51 million (about €58.4 million), with performance-related add-ons capable of taking the total value to £55 million. Konsa agreed to a four-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months, taking the number 15 shirt in north London. Talks between the clubs had spanned several weeks due to differing valuations, with Arsenal also considering Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah before agreeing terms on Wednesday. Konsa subsequently completed his medical examination at London Colney on Thursday. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta noted that Konsa provides defensive versatility ahead of the domestic and European campaign.
Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League's most consistent performers. Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies.

Defensive shortages at the Emirates
The recruitment addresses significant defensive absences in Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's squad following their first league title in 22 years. French central defender William Saliba faces several months on the sidelines due to a back injury. Dutch international Jurrien Timber has also struggled with persistent groin issues that began in March and ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup. Konsa is expected to partner Gabriel Magalhães in central defence, joining a positional group that also features Cristhian Mosquera. Konsa was presented to supporters before Arsenal opened their title defence on Friday with a 3-0 victory against Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.
I want to keep winning, I'm hungry to win and that's what I'm here for. I'll do everything in my power to continue bringing success to this club.
Seven years of service at Villa Park
Konsa departs Aston Villa following seven seasons in the West Midlands after joining from Brentford in July 2019. The 28-year-old made 286 appearances and scored 12 goals for Villa, having previously developed at Charlton Athletic. In the 2025/26 season, Konsa played 48 matches across all competitions, scoring twice and providing one assist as Unai Emery's side finished fourth in the Premier League. He played an integral role in Villa's Europa League title victory in May 2026, the club's first European trophy since 1982. At international level, Konsa represented England at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, starting seven matches and scoring in the 6-4 third-place playoff victory against France.
Squad turnover and summer business
The £51 million transaction pushed Arsenal's total expenditure in the summer transfer window to £160 million, with the club also linked to Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. Arsenal previously signed Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle for £75 million and Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million. The club also converted Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent switch and added goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds United. For Villa, Konsa's exit follows the departures of Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans earlier in the window. Konsa was granted four weeks off after the World Cup and missed Villa's 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, with his Arsenal debut potentially arriving on 31 August against Villa at Villa Park.
