Mechanical variable aperture and image authentication

The primary camera upgrade centers on a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera equipped with a mechanical variable aperture mechanism. The system utilizes six laser-cut polymer composite blades operated by a rotor mechanism to adjust physical light intake, reaching an aperture of f/1.48 at its widest setting. Photographers can rely on automatic adjustments or select between four preset aperture values manually within the updated Camera application. The Camera interface also introduces manual controls for shutter speed, white balance, and exposure histograms, alongside texture and grain adjustments in Photographic Styles. For video, users can apply post-capture cinematic effects at up to 60 frames per second, record 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse footage, and isolate music using Audio Mix. The sensor introduces Apple Reference Image, a hardware-level feature that cryptographically signs captured pixels to establish authenticity against artificial intelligence generation.

Silicon architecture and battery performance

Both devices run on the A20 Pro processor, built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. The system-on-chip includes a six-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, a seven-core GPU providing a 40% gain in graphics performance, and a 50% increase in memory bandwidth over the previous generation. Artificial intelligence workloads are handled by a 32-core Neural Engine paired with a dedicated secondary Neural Engine, delivering twice the AI processing capability of the A19 Pro. The processor is connected directly to a newly engineered vapor chamber to manage heat during sustained operations. Battery longevity reaches 24 hours of standard usage on the iPhone 18 Pro, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers up to 30 hours of runtime.

Regional feature restrictions and pricing

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, representing a $100 price increase over corresponding previous-generation models. Preorders open on Saturday, September 12, 2026, ahead of in-store availability on Friday, September 18, 2026. Apple scheduled the foldable iPhone Duo for release in October 2026 at a starting price of $1,999. Regional regulatory requirements create differences in software capabilities across global markets. Siri AI will not be available in the European Union at launch across iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and European users cannot capture Apple Reference Images at release. In China, regulatory requirements prevent the inclusion of the Reference Image feature entirely.
