
Heraklion court convicts mother and ex-partner of murder in Angelos case
The Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion delivered a unanimous guilty verdict against the 27-year-old mother and her 44-year-old former partner for the intentional homicide of 3-year-old Angelos, following months of trial over the brutal abuse that led to his death in early 2025.
The verdict
A panel of judges and jurors at the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion unanimously found both defendants guilty of intentional homicide committed jointly and in a calm mental state, as well as inflicting injuries and severe intended bodily harm. The verdict was delivered shortly after noon on 30 June 2026, bringing a close to a case that drew national attention.
The 27-year-old mother’s request for recognition of diminished capacity was rejected outright. The court also convicted the 44-year-old male defendant on additional counts of illegal collection and recording of personal data and weapons offences, while acquitting him of a drug possession charge.
The abuse
Angelos was taken to the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) on 26 January 2025 with severe abuse injuries. He spent several days in the paediatric intensive care unit before being declared brain dead. His grandmother decided to donate his organs, according to court documents cited in several reports.

Charges in detail
The pair faced a catalogue of charges: intentional homicide by co-perpetration, exposure of a minor to danger, weapons use and possession (a club found in the family home), and illegal possession of a hunting weapon. The male defendant additionally faced charges of collecting and recording personal data (from which he was found guilty) and drug possession (from which he was acquitted).
Father acquitted
The biological father of Angelos, who had been referred to trial over earlier abuse allegations, was unanimously acquitted by the court. The public prosecutor had also recommended his acquittal.
Sentencing phase
The court session was continuing with the examination of any mitigating factors that could affect the final penalties. The process for sentencing was still underway at the time of reporting.
