Four wildfires erupt in Seville and Córdoba provinces amid scorching heat, one controlled by nightfall
Firefighters battled four separate forest fires in the provinces of Seville and Córdoba on Saturday, with high temperatures and gusty winds complicating efforts. One blaze was brought under control by late evening.
Multiple fires break out
Four forest fires were declared across Andalusia on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as a heatwave gripped the region. The first was reported at 11:30 in Guillena (Seville), followed by Villanueva del Río y Minas at 12:00, Morón de la Frontera at around 12:35, and Los Blázquez (Córdoba) between 17:00 and 18:00. The fires stretched resources thin, with more than 200 personnel deployed in Seville province alone.
Guillena and the farmer's firebreak
In Guillena, the blaze near the Mundo Park zoo prompted an immediate response. A local farmer used his tractor to cut a firebreak about 150 metres from a housing development, slowing the flames' advance. The zoo closed to the public as a precaution.
The zoo is closed to the public.
By late evening, 28 professionals and three fire engines remained on site after aerial units withdrew at sunset. The fire was described as evolving favourably.
Villanueva del Río y Minas controlled
The fire in Villanueva del Río y Minas, which started at noon, was declared controlled at 23:23. At its peak, the operation involved a heavy helicopter, three medium helicopters, one light helicopter, two ground-loading aircraft, 52 professionals, two fire engines, and a medical unit. By night, 26 personnel and three engines stayed on scene.
Morón de la Frontera and Los Blázquez
In Morón de la Frontera, the fire at La Romera mobilised nine aircraft (four medium helicopters, one heavy, one command helicopter, two ground-loading planes, and one coordination plane) plus 60 ground personnel, a meteorology unit, a command team, a medical unit, and four fire engines. The Los Blázquez fire in Córdoba province drew seven aircraft (one heavy helicopter, four ground-loading planes, two light amphibious planes), 32 professionals, and two fire engines.
Response and conditions
High temperatures and wind gusts fuelled the flames throughout the afternoon. No road closures or casualties were reported. The Infoca plan coordinated the multi-front response, with aerial means forced to stand down after sunset.
