Algeria comes back to beat debutant Jordan 2-1 to keep World Cup hopes alive
Algeria fought back from a goal down to beat World Cup debutants Jordan 2-1 in their Group J match on Tuesday, keeping their knockout stage hopes alive.
Pre-match context
Both teams entered the match needing points after opening group defeats. Algeria had lost 0-3 to Argentina, while Jordania suffered a 1-3 loss to Austria in their first ever World Cup appearance. Algeria, ranked 35 places higher by FIFA and making their fourth appearance in five tournaments, were clear favourites.
First half surprise
Jordan adopted a cautious approach, absorbing early pressure. Riyad Mahrez was active for Algeria but missed a one-on-one chance in the 20th minute. Against the run of play, Nizar Al-Rashdan put Jordan ahead in the 36th minute with a well-struck shot past goalkeeper Luca Zidane. The goal came somewhat fortuitously after a miscue by a teammate, but Al-Rashdan’s finish from outside the box was precise. Algeria lost composure and created little for the remainder of the half, prompting coach Vladimir Petkovic to make two substitutions at the break.
Second half comeback
Algeria’s pressure finally paid off from a set piece. In the 69th minute, Mahrez delivered a corner and Nadir Benbouali (named Ahmed Benbouali by one Polish outlet) rose unmarked to head in the equaliser. The goal visibly lifted Algeria, who continued to threaten from dead-ball situations. With less than ten minutes remaining, another corner caused chaos in the Jordanian box, and Amine Gouiri (reported as Amir Gouiri by one source) forced the ball over the line from close range to make it 2-1.
Group implications
Jordan, who had also impressed in spells against Austria, could not respond in the closing stages. The defeat leaves them with zero points and effectively eliminated from the tournament. Algeria move to three points and remain in contention for a knockout spot, with their final group game still to play.
