American League blanks National League 4-0 in All-Star shutout, Cody Bellinger wins MVP; Jordan Walker captures Home Run Derby in walk-off finish
The American League pitching staff combined on a three-hitter to blank the National League 4-0 in the 96th MLB All-Star Game, while Jordan Walker's walk-off Home Run Derby victory electrified Philadelphia.
Walker’s walk-off stuns Philly
Jordan Walker became the first St. Louis Cardinal to win the Home Run Derby on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, homering on his final six swings to chase down Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber in the final round. Schwarber had set the bar at 11 home runs, keeping the capacity crowd in full roar. Walker, chewing bubble gum and ignoring the boos, reached 12 with a walk-off blast over the left-field wall. His winner’s check of $1 million eclipsed his $799,400 salary.
Walk just went nuts, man. That was amazing to see.
I was once told you don’t boo nobodies. So it feels pretty good.
The event showcased MLB’s revised format, which eliminated the timed clock and allowed a hitter to continue swinging as long as the final swing of a turn was a home run. Walker and Schwarber each advanced out of a first round in which Bryce Harper and Ben Rice were eliminated. The derby was the first major moment of All-Star festivities, and it foreshadowed a pitching-dominated Midsummer Classic the next night.

American League pitching blanks NL 4-0
The AL’s arms produced the first All-Star shutout since 2013. Dylan Cease struck out the side to open the game, and 10 relievers combined on a three-hitter. The National League managed only singles by Juan Soto, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Otto Lopez and never advanced a runner past first base. The two staffs piled up 27 strikeouts, 15 by AL pitchers, in a brisk contest that had fans sitting through long stretches without offense. Philadelphia’s own Cristopher Sanchez, the NL starter, surrendered three first-inning runs that proved decisive.

Bellinger takes MVP, Caminero exits with injury
New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger drove in two runs with a first-inning single off Sanchez and was named All-Star Game MVP, the third Yankee to earn the honor and the first since Giancarlo Stanton in 2022. Batting in place of the injured Aaron Judge, Bellinger gave the AL an early cushion. His teammate Ben Rice followed with an RBI single of his own. The only extra-base hit of the night belonged to Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox, who homered off Justin Wrobleski in the eighth inning.
Tampa Bay Rays star Junior Caminero, fourth in the majors with 28 home runs, left the game after being hit on the left hand by a 98 mph pitch from St. Louis’ Riley O’Brien in the third inning. He immediately headed to the clubhouse but later X-rays came back clean, averting what could have been a costly injury for a key AL East contender.
Labor uncertainty looms over festivities
Beyond the diamond, the sport’s labor future was a persistent undercurrent. Commissioner Rob Manfred used the All-Star platform to advocate for a salary cap and floor, a proposal the MLB Players Association has flatly rejected. With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire in December, both sides acknowledged the real possibility of a work stoppage. Players interviewed during workout day expressed broad satisfaction with the current state of the game and a desire to avoid drastic changes. Detroit Tigers veteran Justin Verlander captured the mood, saying he was genuinely worried because the game is in a great place and he hopes nothing disrupts it. The owners, meanwhile, linked their messaging to a “Level The Playing Field” campaign visible on official MLB social channels.
