Aitana and El Mago Pop unite to buy the historic Teatro Aquitània in Barcelona's Les Corts district
The singer Aitana and illusionist Antonio Díaz (El Mago Pop) announced on Monday their joint purchase of Barcelona's Teatro Aquitània, a historic cinema-turned-theatre, marking an uncommon entrepreneurial move by two of Spain's top stage artists.
An unlikely business duo
Two of Spain's most recognisable performers are now business partners. Singer Aitana and illusionist Antonio Díaz, widely known as El Mago Pop, have joined forces to buy Barcelona's Teatro Aquitània, they announced via social media on Monday morning. The partnership is a first for Díaz, who has built a record-breaking solo career on Broadway and across Spain. "Nunca había tenido un socio en ninguno de mis proyectos y, por eso, me hace una ilusión muy especial que mi primera socia sea Aitana, una artista a la que admiro profundamente," he said in a press statement.
I've never had a partner in any of my projects, and that's why it's so special to me that my first partner is Aitana, an artist I deeply admire.
The Teatro Aquitània's past life
The theatre stands at number 33 on Avenida de Sarrià, in Barcelona's Les Corts district. It opened its doors in 1945 as Cine Infanta and for years housed the Filmoteca de Catalunya, serving as an important venue for independent and ideological cinema, according to reports. After the Filmoteca moved to its current Raval site, the space was remodelled into an intimate theatre designed to bring audiences close to the stage. It now enters what backers call a definitive new chapter, leaving behind a history of multiple reinventions.
A shared belief in live performance
Both artists framed the acquisition as more than a real estate deal. Aitana, on her 'Cuarto Azul World Tour' with multi-platinum sales, and the chart-topping illusionist said they want the theatre to become a home for talent, creativity, and new productions. "Creemos profundamente en el futuro de los teatros y para nosotros es un privilegio poder contribuir a preservar y hacer crecer un espacio tan especial como el Teatro Aquitània," Aitana stated in the joint release.
We believe deeply in the future of theatres, and it is a privilege for us to help preserve and grow a space as special as the Teatro Aquitània.
The team added that they have been dreaming of a joint project for a long time and could think of no better way to start than by investing in culture and the future of the performing arts.
Ambitions for Barcelona's creative scene
Behind the purchase is a long-term vision, the pair said. The project aims to support emerging talent, foster professionalisation in the performing arts, create jobs, and reinforce Barcelona's standing as a European cultural reference point. Díaz noted he hopes to contribute a "grain of sand" so that the city remains an international hub for scenic creation, where more artists and professionals can find a place to develop their work.
What comes next
Details of programming and a reopening timeline have not been disclosed, but Aitana and El Mago Pop promised to reveal more soon. "Esto es solo el principio. Tenemos muchísimas ganas de enseñaros todo lo que estamos preparando," they said, calling the announcement just the beginning.
