
Fire near Acharnes triggers ground and aerial firefighting response
A wildfire ignited in low vegetation near the Saranta Martyres hill in Acharnes, Attica, on Friday, shortly before 16:00. Firefighters, supported by two aircraft and a helicopter, are working to contain the blaze.
Fire breaks out near Saranta Martyres hill
A wildfire erupted shortly before 16:00 on Friday 3 July in the area of Saranta Martyres (also referred to as 40 Martyres) hill, within the municipality of Acharnes in Attica. The fire is burning through dry grass and low vegetation. According to reports from the Fire Service, the blaze is located near residential neighbourhoods, and moderate winds in the area are complicating containment efforts.
Ground and aerial response
Immediately after the alarm was raised, the Hellenic Fire Service dispatched a force. On the ground, 32 firefighters are operating, including a pedestrian unit from the 1st Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), supported by 10 fire engines. Two water-dropping aircraft and one helicopter were scrambled for aerial firefighting. Additionally, water tankers from the Attica Region have been brought in to assist with water supply.
Real-time monitoring via drone
The National Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) is receiving continuous live footage from a drone equipped with both optical and thermal cameras. This feed provides the incident command with real-time situational awareness, helping to direct resources effectively.
Arson investigation begins
The West Attica Arson Crimes Investigation Unit has been dispatched to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. No preliminary conclusions have been announced. There have been no reports of injuries or property damage so far.
