32-year-old woman burned with acid outside parents' home in Scorzè, near Venice
A 32-year-old woman is hospitalized with serious burns after a man threw corrosive liquid on her in Peseggia di Scorzè, a town near Venice, on the evening of June 26. She is not in life-threatening condition.
The attack
A 32-year-old woman was attacked with acid in Peseggia di Scorzè, near Venice, just before 10 p.m. on June 26. She had driven from Mestre to her parents' house and was getting out of her car when a man approached and threw a corrosive liquid at her. The substance struck her neck, arms, and part of her face. The attacker then fled; the liquid has not been definitively identified but may have been muriatic acid.
Victim's condition
The woman was taken to the burns centre at Padua's hospital with burns covering 18 percent of her body, according to Repubblica. Medical staff describe her wounds as serious but not life-threatening. She remains in shock and has been unable to provide a detailed account to investigators.
Investigation
The Carabinieri from Scorzè are leading the investigation. The woman has told officers that she does not believe she was the target of anyone in particular. Detectives are therefore examining her social circle, recent contacts, and any events that might explain the attack.
Reaction
Scorzè mayor Giovanni Battista Mestriner called the incident "a terrible tragedy, which happened right in the town centre, sudden and for now inexplicable." He added: "The young woman involved is a citizen of ours, born and raised here. We need clarity and we trust the Carabinieri of Scorzè, always very attentive and vigilant, to find answers. In the meantime, we stand by her in the face of this shocking act. The destructive violence against women must end."
