43 roads closed in Spain as wildfires hit Madrid, Toledo, Ávila, and Castellón

Fire situation

The wildfires in central Spain remain active on Monday 27 July 2026, with the most intense focus in the Sierra Oeste of Madrid. The Madrid regional government identified the area around the Alberche river and the San Juan reservoir as the most concerning zones for the day. Specifically, flames are affecting the surroundings of the Cofio river, the El Encinar del Alberche urbanization in Villa del Prado, and residential areas south of the San Juan reservoir in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The fire has been burning since at least 25 July, when civil guard vehicles were already monitoring closed roads during firefighting operations in Robledo de Chavela. Firefighting efforts are being hampered by wind gusts of up to 30 km/h, despite what the government described as an intense night of work aimed at stabilizing the blaze.

Road closures in Madrid

As of 07:45 on 27 July, 13 roads in the Community of Madrid are fully or partially closed, according to the regional government's latest update. The closures affect key routes in the western part of the region. The M-501 is shut in both directions between Navas del Rey and San Martín de Valdeiglesias (km 40-69), while the M-507 is closed between Aldea del Fresno and Villa del Prado (km 28.5-36). The M-510 is closed in both directions from Valdemorillo to the provincial boundary (km 20.6-54.5). Other roads, such as the M-512, have partial closures: the section between Robledo de Chavela and the M-501 junction is closed in both directions, while the stretch from Santa María de la Alameda to Robledo de Chavela is closed only in the ascending direction. The M-521 is closed in the descending direction between Fresnedillas de la Oliva and Robledo de Chavela, and in both directions between Quijorna and Navalagamella. The M-533 and M-855 are closed in the ascending direction from Peralejo and Navas del Rey, respectively. The M-537, M-539, M-541, and M-957 are also affected, with full closures in both directions on various segments.

Closures in other provinces

Beyond Madrid, the wildfires have forced the closure of 30 additional secondary roads across Toledo, Ávila, and Castellón, bringing the total to 43 roads affected nationwide, according to the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). In Toledo, 13 roads are closed, including the CM-5001 in El Cornicabral, the CM-5005 in Escalona, and the TO-1560 in Almorox. Ávila has 12 roads shut, such as the AV-502 and AV-512 near Cebreros, and the N-403 at Las Cruceras. In Castellón, five roads are closed, including the CV-200 in Aín and the CV-215 in l'Alcúdia de Veo.

Travel advisories

The DGT has urged drivers to avoid travel through the Sierra Oeste of Madrid and the affected areas of Toledo, Ávila, and Castellón. Authorities recommend checking the status of roads on official channels before setting out. Emergency services are on site, and drivers are asked to follow their instructions.
