Weapons found in stolen car near Sarcelles synagogue, 300 evacuated after DGSI alert
Police discovered a stolen vehicle containing an assault rifle and a pistol near a synagogue in Sarcelles, north of Paris, on Saturday evening, leading to the evacuation of about 300 people from the area.
Discovery and DGSI alert
On Saturday, July 11, at approximately 9:30 PM, the Brigade Anti-Criminalité (BAC) in Sarcelles received a call from the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Intérieure (DGSI), France’s domestic intelligence service, about a suspicious abandoned vehicle on Rue Henri-Dunant. The car was parked near a synagogue, a cinema, and several restaurants in this northern Paris suburb. Intelligence assessments indicated the vehicle might contain explosives and could be used against Sarcelles’s substantial Jewish community, according to multiple sources.
Evacuation and initial response
Police immediately cordoned off the street and began evacuating the vicinity. Roughly 300 people were moved out of the cinema, shops, and restaurants. The area, typically busy on a Saturday evening, was cleared without any injuries. A bomb disposal unit was dispatched to the scene as a precaution.

- Security perimeter established; about 300 people evacuated from nearby cinema, restaurants, and synagogue.
- Demining team inspects car; no explosives found, assault rifle and pistol discovered.

What the deminers found
After examining the vehicle, the bomb squad confirmed there were no explosives inside. However, they recovered an assault rifle and a pistol from the trunk. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, speaking on BFMTV the following morning, described the long firearm as an “arme de guerre”, a military-grade weapon. A police source told the AFP news agency that the car had been stolen, though details of the theft were not released.
I’ve been following this case since last night.
A suspect identified but not arrested
Sources provided conflicting information about a suspect. Franceinfo, citing police sources, reported that a suspect had been identified and found near the vehicle. Meanwhile, BFMTV’s coverage carried the headline “Pas de suspect interpellé” (No suspect arrested), and Nunez himself stated on the same channel that “the individuals have not been identified.” The minister said a judicial investigation had been opened, with Val-d’Oise police and specialized intelligence units leading the probe.
We do not know the motives, and the individuals have not been identified.
Ongoing investigation and unclear threat
When asked about an imminent threat, Nunez responded, “We don’t know.” He emphasized that “a certain number of measures” had been taken and that “the relevant prosecutors are investigating,” but did not elaborate further. The incident has prompted heightened security around community sites, though no further details were provided. The investigation will seek to determine whether the car was positioned intentionally and whether a broader plot existed.
We don’t know.
