Rhineland-Palatinate Plans 224 Vocational Preparation Classes for 3,279 Students
The state will offer 224 classes for the vocational preparation year (Berufsvorbereitungsjahr) in 2026/27, serving 3,279 young people who lack a school-leaving certificate, the education ministry announced.
Program details
In the 2026/27 school year, Rhineland-Palatinate will run 224 vocational preparation year classes, according to the state education ministry. As of current planning, 3,279 students are expected to take part. The program is based at vocational schools and targets young people who have not obtained a certificate of vocational readiness (Berufsreife). It aims to prepare them for vocational training or direct employment.
Admissions and target group
To enter the program, students must have completed at least nine years of schooling. They also need a leaving certificate from a Realschule plus, or a leaving or completion certificate from a school with a learning support focus. The vocational preparation year serves as a bridge for those who might otherwise lack qualifications.
Reform effects and integration
The education ministry noted, in response to a parliamentary inquiry from the AfD faction, that student numbers have stabilized since the program was reformed. The reforms of the 2022/23 school year introduced mandatory learning counselling, more school social work, and increased practical components. A new subject, "Vocational Learning and Working," now combines theoretical and practical instruction. The ministry also highlighted the program's role in integrating newly arrived young people, describing it as an important transitional option for school-age youth who do not yet have an apprenticeship place.
