22 flee burning coach on A1 near Częstochowa; no injuries
All 22 people aboard a coach that caught fire on a connector road at the Częstochowa Północ interchange escaped unharmed with their luggage before eight fire units extinguished the blaze, completely destroying the vehicle.
Bus catches fire on A1 connector
At 7:43 on the morning of Friday, 10 July 2026, the Częstochowa fire brigade received an emergency call about a coach on fire at the Częstochowa Północ interchange of the A1 motorway. The coach was standing on the connector ramp that links al. Wojska Polskiego, the primary road into the city, with the A1 carriageway. The vehicle was positioned directly beneath the motorway viaduct, and thick black smoke and flames were already visible from the A1 main lanes. All 22 people aboard, including the driver, had evacuated the bus with their luggage and were waiting at a safe distance before the fire service was even notified. A video sent to TVN24's Kontakt24 platform shows the coach fully ablaze, with a tall column of smoke rising into the sky.
It carried 22 people, including the driver. All left the vehicle before units arrived. They took their suitcases. The bus was completely burned.
A duty officer from the fire service told TVN24 that the most likely cause was a brake malfunction. No injuries were reported, and all evacuees were unharmed.
Fire service response
Eight fire engine crews from the Częstochowa Municipal State Fire Service were dispatched to kilometre 417.8 of the A1. On arrival they found the coach already well alight. Crews deployed foam and water to bring the blaze under control, and because the fire was raging directly underneath the A1 overpass, they devoted particular effort to cooling the viaduct and preventing any structural damage. Despite their response, the bus was completely destroyed, leaving only a charred shell. No hazardous materials were found at the scene, and no other vehicles were involved.
- Fire reported to Częstochowa fire brigade
- All 22 passengers and driver leave the coach with luggage before fire units arrive
- Eight crews deploy foam and water, prioritising protection of the A1 viaduct; coach completely destroyed
- Police block the ramp, cutting off exits from Gdańsk and entrances towards Katowice
Blocked connector causes disruption
Police immediately closed the affected ramp. The closure blocked motorists travelling from Gdańsk on the A1 from exiting at Częstochowa Północ, and it also prevented drivers from joining the A1 towards Katowice from the city side. Effectively, the interchange was cut off for all movements except through-traffic on the main motorway. The main A1 carriageway itself continued to carry traffic without any hindrance. Barbara Poznańska, press officer of the Częstochowa municipal police, confirmed that the closure would remain in place while emergency crews completed their work and an investigation into the cause got underway. The cordon stayed in force through the morning.
Brake failure suspected
According to the initial assessment by the fire service, the fire most likely originated from a failure in the coach's braking system. A full investigation has been opened. The operator of the coach has not been publicly named, and authorities have yet to release any further information about the vehicle's history or journey. No other vehicles were damaged, and no environmental hazards were reported.
Early report mislocates the incident
Dziennik Zachodni published an early report at 6:15 UTC that placed the fire at the Łódź Północ interchange. However, every subsequent statement from the fire brigade, police, and other Polish news organisations consistently identified the location as Częstochowa Północ. The discrepancy appears to have been caused by initial confusion as the details were still emerging.
